Re: CenturyLink
Yeah I completely agree! At a certain point there has to be a change in the hardware to keep everything relevant.

Re: CenturyLink
Software development can certainly keep old hardware relevant for a long time, but at some point, new hardware will need to kick in, too.

Re: CenturyLink
I agree. I think you have to focus on both in order to further the success and advancements of both. Especially hardware.

Seen & Heard: Less Is More for CenturyLink
This article is interesting because it explains the new centurylinks new novel approach about SDN/NFV. The cost wil be going up and noone usally like's that. I think this will be good for centurylink in the long run. The service providers and the virtulization will be great.

Re: Software is where its at
@SDNDude Good point. While I think CenturyLink is on a good track, all this noise means nothing unless you can actually provide value to customers. Can they do that? They've been able to before, with declining results. Hopefully they can sustain in this case.

Software is where its at
The real cost in all of this is the service development costs. Without services one can sell, this is all just a science experiment. The difficulty is then creating an enviroment in the OSS/BSS space that can facilitate rapid service design and deployment. Centurylink is saddled with ancient systems in their legacy world, so regardless of how fast one can create something, it still must be put into the machine to quote, order, bill and so forth. This is where the real time and cost is. Without this recognition Centurylink will continue to miss the mark, as they did today in their earnings call.

Re: CenturyLink
@mhhf1ve, very true on the hardware.  On the software though that will carry them forward in vertical industries playing catch-up, but will run out of steam as well.

The competitive models will Apply the software configurations to changing industry developments and demands and establish the platforms (ecosystems) that will enable them to deliver "value" in services to their customers.

Re: Less for Century Link
Time for CenturyLink to bring on the speed. If they don't, they will lose customers to other service providers who are moving fast on this. And the margins in the business sector are pretty good - companies are willing to pony up for these services.

Re: CenturyLink
As many astute tech leaders have pointed out, any company that's serious about hardware is also serious about software. Software and hardware go hand in hand, so it's a bit foolish to focus on just hardware.

Now.. focusing on just software... that's a different story, and there are plenty of examples of companies that can do just software successfully for a long time.
