Re: Roku TV OS
Yes, it updates often, but I won't notice it until I choose an app and it takes a little longer to load for the first time after an update. We have a Roku mostly house apart from a few sony Bluray players and I have to say that I love the OS. My Roku boxes are older, so I'm sure newer boxes are different, but I have to say that the TV OS is much better than my box OS.

Re: Roku TV OS
@af I've wondered what the user experience was like. Does the TV OS get updated regularly just like the Roku boxes? I have a smart tv that I had to take offline because the manufacturer stopped issuing firmware updates.

Re: Behind the looking glass
Hmm I've never been a consumer, but that's interesting. It's makes sense though because ads have to be coming from someone:

Re: Roku TV OS
afwriter - I have heard that quite a bit from Roku owners. Be interesting to see if anyone has both an Apple TV and a Roku, and what UI they prefer. Also, if one is better suited to more traditional web/interactive apps vs. video search and navigation.

Re: Roku
srufolo - Roku doesn't break-out revenues, but devices are the majority of revenue. I would guess somewhere between 60-65%, but falling as a percentage. It's much more focused on licensing deals and advertising revenue than it has been, and I think management sees a real opportunity there.

Roku
What is Roku's revenue for the sale of its devices, such as the set-top boxes? Hopefully, once Roku gets this advertising strategy down, ad revenue will increase. Advertisements that are targeted to a certain audience usually work. I know I've gone to sites that pop uo on Facebook to find out more of what the advertiser had to offer.

Roku TV OS
I have a TV with the Roku OS and I have to say it has made my life easier. It is great having everything in one place and the UI is one of the best I have ever used. As far as advertisments go, they do a great job of advertising without being overbearing about it. I have clicked over to their main page ad quite a few times for more information about what they are advertising.

Re: TV ads...
mhhf1ve - yes, I think especially on TV, it's been hard to get rid of. I think part of it is that newer options haven't had the kind of spectacular success needed to drive change, but I think it's also just how the eco-system is set up. Media planners and buyers know how to value and evaluate and trade 30-second commercials, agencies and broadcasters know how to sell them. There's an agreed upon system for measuring them, even if everyone complains about it and even as consumers, we're used to seeing them. New ad formats shift things around, and would need a fairly substantial, holistic set of changes across the value chain.

TV ads...
> " the bread-and-butter format is the 30-second commercial. It's still alive and kicking...."

That's an interesting tidbit.. and I assume the 30-sec ad will continue to exist for quite some time. I've seen some experimental ad formats that just don't seem as friendly -- they're either more intrusive by requiring the viewer to interact and click.. or they seem too short to be effective.

Behind the looking glass
This was an excellent look into advertising on Roku. I've been a Roku user for many years and have wondered how they managed ads.
