Re: Standards
@Mike: I don't disagree.  I just see it as trading one set of problems for a different set of problems.  Moreover, I think other things have to happen in the market first for us to get to that point and for the demand to properly evolve into a solution.

To both of our expressed concerns, AT&T exec Rick Hubbard's sentiments from my interview with him a few months ago (link) are pretty on point here:

I think if the market reacts with a demand to have more types of functions working together, then standards are going to become really important. If the market reacts the way they do today, where VNFs still appear to be purpose-built and all you have really done is virtualized your purpose-built premise equipment into a virtual instance based on software, then I think it will keep pressing the issue of 'How would standards ever change that?'

Re: Standards
Joe, what I hear is that operators are unhappy with each vendor having its own VNF. If there was more standardization there a VNF would work the same across each operator's network instead of making adjustments each time. That's just one example.

Standards
We're a long way off from standards -- or the lack thereof -- being real pain points for NFV and virtualization in general.

And even then, the dickering over coming to a consensus on standards will only slow NFV innovation and deployment, I suspect.

Just to "Break the Ice" On This Super Bowl Sunday....
As I welcome this development, what I view as critical is interopertablility--the need to be open and be ready to embrace a multitude of standards is crucial.    Whether in reality it is sustainable is a question I hope we can deliberate thorughout the month.

Enjoy Super Bowl Sunday
