@dcawrey, excactly!  That is what the leaders are doing - and will make money doing it - because it is the only way you will bridge all the varieties that exist and are growing.  Not only that, but the economies of scale make platforms a better value proposition.

@dcawrey  good few years ago in  Canada I was in the almost the same project... and things never go as planned... in my mind for thing to work... few things must be in place...  like:

proper real life planing

hardware and software in place

proper training and availability in time...

@dcawrey Unfortunately, cobbled together systems still persist. That's the way I'd describe the systems in my daughter's university. If ever something could use the streaminlining of one ring to rule them all -- or just a single log-on -- for access to all parts of the site for students, that's it.

It's about time we're getting to a world where there is a unified platform. 

I can remember working on systems that were so cobbled together. Back then I knew this wouldn't last. Networks need more efficiency and reliability than that.

Agreed, it is added analysis.  I believe the strength in this article and explanations is presenting the concept of scalability with design.  They have effectively architectured parallel developments that result in effective virtualization.  How it functions, ie physical body functioning, demonstrates its effectiveness in how it serves and contributes to the system overall.

Thanks for dropping by Douglas. When I spoke to Mazin Gilbert about BSS with ECOMP he mentioned "building" bridges between the two, but now we have a detailed explanation

@Ariella, I agree, it might not be as relavent to technology.  I think a more appropriate analogy is the concept of platform and modules - that better represent the separate processes or components in a network and the unification that is created in a platform setting.

@dnassaur Thanks very much for your thoughtful response. True, we do have a lot more possibilities to rethink functions and arrangements in connected systems and smart cities where biological boundaries don't apply.

Thank you for your comments. Agree with your notion that you can't identify one single organ to watch. Our intended use of the analogy is not to assume which organs to watch or are necessary, but to highlight their ability to relocate beyond the traditional bounds of the body.

Imagine the value of being able to place a specific organ outside the body and closer to it's consumer or producer counterpart. The ability to dynamically transform and adapt specific functions and relocate them to their optimal location while still appearing to be sitting right next to each other will prove a vital capability enabling IoT, SDN/NFV and Big Data enabled functionality.

A good example is in the IoT context. Smart city devices work closely together to detect and respond to activities within the community. Producers, providers and consumers of content and capabilities interact across diverse networks, controllers and devices.

The ability to encapsulate specific functionality and move it around dynamically to meet point-in-time demand is very valuable. As you well indicated, scaling infrastructure based on traditional indicators is done for convenience. In this model, functionality is scaled, networking is maintained dynamically and security is assured without remaining bound to specific infrastructure.
