Re: Facebook Future
@batye yes, I have several accounts open, though I only really use one. I even stopped using the account I had at Verion for years, though for some reason that box still get mail that goes to Outlook.

Re: Facebook Future
I don't think Google needs to verify a mobile number with a text message. There is a central database of all US phone numbers that can be searched. Twitter verifies mobile numbers just to make sure the. Umber you gave is actually a phone in your possession, I think.

@mhhf1ve it hasn't called to verified it is I as far as I recall. I do believe Twitter does a check with a text, though.

Re: Facebook Future
I'm sure google knows what phone numbers are landlines and which are mobile numbers. If the number you supplied wasn't a residential landline-- I wonder if Google would have requested more information or an alternate number....

Re: Facebook Future
@mhhf1ve Just to test that out, I just created a new account TelcoTest2017@gmail.com. It's true it asks for a phone number, though it had it already filled in from my existing account. That number is actually not a mobile number, and I didn't have  to do a text verfiication. I've opened several gmail accounts, though I think they all link off my orignal one in some way. So I wouldn't fool Google, but I have used alternative emails to create new Twitter accounts when it only allowed me one account per email. I have since let those accounts slide and don't check my other gmail accounts either. I did once have to retrieve one, though because I had actually created for the sake of creating a Twitter and FB account for a client. He let both go dormant for a very long time but wanted to revive them at some point and did not know how to log in.

Re: Facebook Future
I'm sure FB & Google have internal estimates for how many "fake" users they have... But it's probably not something that any company wants to publish.

I also assume that Facebook knows that it will never reach 100% penetration in any market, but I wonder what the level is where FB ceases to try to gain more. 30%? I know a few people who will never use Facebook... and I'm sure everyone knows a few people who won't, too.

Re: Facebook Future
Have you tried creating a new gmail account lately? It requires a mobile phone number and all sorts of personal information, too.

Somehow Twitter hasn't figured out how to weed out the spammers as effectively as Google or Facebook.. or maybe Twitter has been hesitant to do so because then its MAUs would go down due to the elimination of all the bots....

I'm not saying it's impossible to set up a fake Gmail or FB acct, but it takes a bit more than making up a birthday and password now.

@Michelle very good question. FB recently came out with a staement about Greater Transparency Through Measurement Partnerships It doesn't bring up the question of fake accounts that can inflate numbers, though it does say it will up up measurement to third parties.
