Re: Facebook Future
Related -- I would really like to see data on the true number of fake accounts on the two services. Each can boast about millions of subscribers, but how valuable (really) are bots and fakes?

Re: Facebook Future
@mhhf1ve I'm sure it would try. But why would you not be able to just set up a gmail account just for that FB account? You can then make up some kind of personal stats and go from there. There are a number of legit FB accounts (I say that b/c I know who these people are) that have very little going on, so a fake one of that sort shoudn't be too hard to pull off. I'd think there are probably hundreds if not thousands of fake accounts in the service of paid follows and likes just as there are on Twitter.

Re: Facebook Future
I'd assume if a person was paranoid enough to go through all the trouble that they wouldn't even be on Facebook at all... because it's a bit difficult to fool Facebook. If you sign up with any kind of non-standard email address (which Facebook assumes means you're a spammer or have some kind of nefarious intent), Facebook makes you jump through a bunch of hoops to verify your account and identity -- such as uploading a government-issued ID.

So if anyone is really trying to fool advertisers with fake marketing data.. FB probably has an algorithm that tries to discern who you are... or it will soon.

Re: Facebook Future
@mhhf1ve The people who even resent using loyalty cards and switch with their friends so that CVS doesn't have a complete and accurate record of all they buy would likely not go for something like that. I wonder if people would try to then beat the system by creating alias accounts just for viewing that would not link to their standard accounts. Of course, it would still pick up on location unless one goes through all the trouble of redirecting to a server somewhere else.

Re: Facebook Future
Facebook isn't really "doing TV" like a traditional broadcaster. It has waay more data about individual viewers than anyone else. It's like a super Nielsen ratings service that controls a video feed. It'll be hard to beat the ad targeting if it can get the programming going. Maybe it. We'd to buy HBO....?

Look, television is an old and tired business. While I don't think that Facebook will be able to immediately gain returns by moving to TV, it's a direction. People like content.

Uh, I'd have to assume that Facebook has put in the same kind of protections that Google has to prevent any single person from altering the algorithms for a nefarious purpose.

However, it doesn't seem like Facebook is shy about performing psychological experiments on its users as long as it does so with a collaboration...

https://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/30/technology/facebook-tinkers-with-users-emotions-in-news-feed-experiment-stirring-outcry.html

But perhaps after that incident, Facebook will be a bit more careful..?

Re: Facebook Future
> "No one is going to search out Facebook videos on their TV."

I would not underestimate Facebook's execution. The FB video tab is starting to look more and more like a viable Youtube-like clone. Youtube has the advantage of being on Chromecasts and Amazon FireTV devices, but I think Facebook video could stream in a similar way and create an engaging channel just like YouTube.

The comparison to Vine isn't quite appropriate because FB has a lot more video creators that are doing "professional" looking content... It's a bit more like Vine+YouTubeRed.
