Re: Level-3 And Better IT Cloud Managment
True. I guess things can get hacked without it being on the cloud, it's just more likely on the cloud. However, everything is moving over to the cloud so they really should get on it..

Sounding a bit like a broken record ... or looped playback ...
There's a great deal of enterprise knowledge included in all those legacy private systems, and until there's a relatively easy way to extract and redeploy it, you'll have vast amounts of middle and lower management resistance to the cloud -- and rightly so, because the cloud is  a tool, not a purpose.

Perhaps just a new incarnation of an old problem?
I'm wondering if what's being called "oversubscription" and treated as a bad thing or problem isn't just the common sense market practice of "buying to the peak load" -- which most companies do with any critical supply.

And of course "buying to the peak load" does lead to overbooking in crisis situations, which is why electric power companies, charter transport companies, athletic stadium ticket vendors, and banks all do their best to control it via some combination of internal and publicly collaborative regulation.  Maybe it's just that the cloud hasn't matured enough yet to suffer a bad "run on the cloud", the way that banks, airlines, and utilities all have?

@vnewman Those companies need to get over those fears and get with the program. Even company data can be hacked without it being in the cloud.

Re: Level-3 And Better IT Cloud Managment
@vnewman This is very true. And in Europe, I believe there are laws in place that limit certain data being in datacenters outside of the continent.

I think given the progression of cloud computing from years ago, we're in a much better place than ever before. Security is always going to be a constant battle, but I think it's certainly improved a lot over the last few years.

In some cases, companies are held back by the clients they serve - many companies take issue with having their data (and their client's sensitive data including credit card and SSNs) - on a site outside the immediate control of their firm.

Level-3 And Better IT Cloud Managment
It's imperative for enterprises to get on board with the cloud or become irrelevant. As this interview so accurately pointed out, enterprises with legacy, on-premise systems will have a tougher time as compared with "born-in-the-cloud' environments. That is an excellent assessment of the situation.

Re: IT Cloud Management
Interesting perspective on the private versus public cloud issues. I think we're seeing more visibility than perhaps ever before, but there's still a lot of room to grow here. Just think of where we've been with the cloud just five years ago. What an improvement.
