Re: Linear Viewing in Decline
@freehe - I'm not entirely sold that content is entirely to blame for the loss in linear content viewership. I think a big part of that shift is the change in our culture brought on my technology. Especially since you can still watch the content you find on linear television, on your tablet or laptop or smartphone. Most of us just aren't sitting at home in front of the television any more. We aren't tied to a big screen on the wall, because we have a little one in our pocket.

Re: TV
@dcawrey - I would be if they went in and actually looked at the demographics for who uses what, families, particularly with small children using televisions to watch their video content would be significantly higher than just about any other group. When my kids are around, we use our television a lot. But over the weekend my kids went to their grandparents for a few nights. My husband and I were alone, and in that setting, we actually tended to watch content on our phones/tablets, and then we were watching shows we each enjoyed separately, rather than each watching the same thing. I would imagine this is what couples without children are doing on a more regular basis. Just my guess.

Linear Viewing in Decline
I believe the statistics that linear viewing has declined. I used to watch 5-6 hours of TV each day but now am down to 1 maybe 2 per day if that much.

Linear TV shows are so predictable and boring. It is hard to find an original show with original content that can keep the viewers attention.

Hopefully this is a wakeup call to offer original content.

TV Rules Germany
I think it will be several years because Germany viewers have a demand for HD or UHD TV.

Re: TV
@dcawrey, I agree. They will pay much more for streaming tv services which will probably be a price shock for consumers.

TV Still Rules
I think the numbers are causing premature excitement. Just because a viewer watches TV doesn't mean they will move to HD, just because a viewer watches HD TV doesn't mean they will move to UHD TV and just because a viewer watches HD TV or UHD tv doesn't mean they won't go back to regular TV.

I had an HD tv and only watched it when viewing movies, not it collects dust in the basement.

On demand rising but not for scheduled programming.
I think why it is declinging because people would like to see something that really interest them like the on demand viewing instead of watching the same programs over and over

Linear v. on-demand
There are suggestions in the US that Hulu will help drive the market more toward library-based viewing and further away from linear TV watching. Yet at the same time, Hulu is about to start offering linear content for the first time. It's an interesting distinction - the idea that a provider might offer linear content, but nonetheless drive customers primarily through an on-demand portal.

Using the TV to view television content? What a preposterous idea!

Wow, I did know Germany was so old-school. But I think they are paying much less for TV than they probably would for these streaming services...
