Multi-CDN
I like how they talked about how the CDN can can handle failure scenarios to come up like the disaster recovery etc.

Level 3 Multi- CDN
Well it seems like they talk about the CDN.  You also talk about having two CDN providers for businesses as they fail.It seems like the numbers will increase as businesses grow.  I hope I come around once I see what happens.

Re: Multi-CDN
What I think is amazing is how quickly services like Netflix and Amazon Prime are able to deliver video without a single hiccup.

Yes, having quality internet is a part of this. Yet CDNs play an important role in the future of entertainment - that's for sure.

Re: Multi-CDN
dcawrey - yes, I think CDNs are the unsing heroes of the Internet. If the slow, unreliable experience that epitomized the early Internet had been all there was, we might be looking at a very diffferent tech landscape today.

Re: Multi-CDN
@Adi I just remember how crappy video was before the days of YouTube.

It was really YouTube that was able to amass users and turn video on the internet into a viable business model. Prior to that, you could argue there was pretty much zero opportunity until the technology was properly developed.

Re: Multi-CDN
@dcawrey, I agree. Netflix and Amazon provide high quality service all the time. Hopefully other companies can learn from them and provide high quality service as well.

Customers are willing to pay more for high quality but are not willing to pay more for poor or average quality.

Strategies
A good point in the article for using CDNs was that companies must have business continuity and disaster recovery strategies.

Multi-CDN Approaches
"The primary benefit of a multi-CDN strategy is performance-based load-balancing.."

"As the number of providers increases, the incremental benefits from increasing the number of suppliers decline as the complexity of troubleshooting, configuration and synchronization increases costs. We see diminishing returns set in quickly as customers increase the number of providers from two to three or four. The cost of complexity more than offsets the benefits of scale."

They have found a way to provide higher quality services, more features, added value and create a win win situation for the company and its customers. This is awesome!

Re: Multi-CDN Approaches
freehe,

We seem to be taking opposite lessons from that quote. The built-in redundancy from CDN falls off rapidly with an increase in the number of different networks that must be accomodated, and therefore "multi-" is probably actually limited to a low integer. It's interesting that that integer is now apparently greater than 1, but it seems like it won't be much greater for the foreseeable future.

Possible advantage for CDN providers?
If a part of the problem in increasing the number of CDNs in play is that each increment adds complexity and difficulty because the added CDN has to be synched with all the current ones and the various translations and protocols have to be worked out, isn't that incentivizing individual providers to come up with more "universal" and "flexible" (or less idosyncratic and persnickety) CDNs, and the industry as a whole to seek suggested standards?
