JohnBarnes - I think that's an important distinction. There has to be a organizational mindset that allows employees to say "you know what, this isn't working even though it's my brainchild. Or worse - that of my boss."
The more data you have coming through, the more objective you can be about recognizing wrong turns and backing out of them.

To be honest, I was pretty surprised to hear Diller's comments about movies not making any money. Yet the more I think about it, the more I realize he's probably right. I was reading something else the other day that sort of explained only Disney did really well last year with the movie business. Not a good sign.

Probably because I spend so much time thinking about data science and Netflix is the shining example of good stuff you can do with data science, I think Netflix's real secret was very rapid accurate feedback, due mainly to really getting a handle on rapid response in a big data world. Their mistakes tended to downgrade to hiccups and their successes tended to upgrade to runaways because they were constantly pumping so much information through their system so effectively.
Which means that the notoriously stick-to-the-plan European and British corporations are in for a pretty brutal fight; maybe Netflix will teach them real agility and agility's silent but vital partner, accurate responsiveness.
Indeed, as I think about it, I'm not that sure that OTT was the inevitable wave of the future so much as I am that Netflix is awfully good at finding out what's needed to ride on any one wave successfully (and getting off any wave that doesn't go anywhere). There might have been other things they could have made work, but this was the one they found.

Netflix has had its share of hiccups along the way including the Quickster disaster. I would say that it was a little bit of planning and a whole lot of luck that got them where they are. I think the fact that they were one of the first on the scene and have had more time to expirment with different formulas has definitely given them an advantage.

It's amazing how far Netflix has come and how big it is now. I guess either by dumb luck or just a visionary strategy, it managed to appeal to the right audience: the binge-watcher, and the Millennials who like to have control over what they watch and when they want to watch it. It's not going to be easy for European Broadcasters to rival Netflix. I just think it caught them by surprise.

@Mike - that's the plan now. They haven't so far, but it's part of the new strategy to make it a hub in it's own right, and not just an ancillary, catch-up platform.

I remember the iPlayer being a big deal right after it launched. The service providers I talked to back then often cited it as an example of what they were aiming for. Taking a page from Netflix, does BBC do original content for the iPlayer?

Agreed; I think everyone is going to need to lift their levels to deliver better multiscreen experiences -- pay-tv providers, broadcasters, movie studios and even OTT providers themselves, because I think there will be a thinning of the herd in coming years.
