Rapid adaptability
The concept of adapting rapidly to a changing world seems to be the core theme Lopez is stressing through his speech. It's about using information to adapt business models and strategies; internal processes from manuals to an ongoing, constant excercise; adapting to new eco-systems and using them to your benefit; adapting offers based on constantly gathered customer data...etc, etc.

And the key to this is data gathering and cloud solutions. Data, which provides insight on coming change, and cloud solutions that enable a technology infrastructure that can adapt as fast as you need it to.

Key insight: Process not data
>>>They don't have their core physical assets; what they have is the way they manage the information that they collect and they hold from their customers and from their processes.

Yes, exactly. Everyone can now pile up data cheaply, and as every data analyst can tell you, everyone is. The real asset is a company's ability to make sense out of it. Stewart Brand said "Information wants to be free, but information also wants to be expensive, and the tension will not go away": we can store and copy huge amounts of info for practically nothing, but the value of insight and understanding keeps going up and up.

The difficulty of transferring insight and understanding is really badly underestimated; that might be another frontier we'll need to cross, someday soon, in information technology and computer communications. Pick almost any statistic, even the most arcane and sophisticated, google it with "calculator", and you can find a bunch of free sites that will compute it for you. But just try finding one that explains, clearly and so that you get it on the first try, when you should calculate it, what it means once you calculate it, etc.

"The fault,  Dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in our selves" is becoming "The fault, dear users, is not in the software, the hardware, the firmware, or the slightly-wiggly-ware, whatever that might be, but in the liveware."

Re: Key insight: Process not data
Processes and mission now change all the time. This is just the nature of businesses today. Unless you are working at a power utility or for a government agency, expect for change to be the only constant.

I think in the technology industry we are all used to this, but it's going to be a real eye opener for others.

Re: Key insight: Process not data
dcawrey,

Laughing out loud because two of my major experiences with working in cutting-edge, hoping-to-be-revolutionary software innovation were in the R&D department of a power company holding company (that is, not just a stodgy old utility but an even stodgier business that owned five stodgy old utilities), and a consulting gig for a government agency. This in the 80s and the 00s respectively.

So I think you can remove all qualification and limitation on your advice, "expect for change to be the only constant."

(Lately i seem to be urging you toward extremism!)

Adaption
"So companies need to adapt and evolve the way they perform their business, or die. Based on the interaction with customers across the world, we have seen millions of different kinds of companies that we name intelligent companies or intelligent enterprises."

Companies must learn how to adapt or get left behind or die as Lopez says. Companies that want to grow and remain competitive must adapt to changing technology, embrace it and learn how to best use it to meet their needs and the needs of their customers.

Digital Revolution Security
"And don't forget one thing that we have mentioned many times here today: security. You need to have a secure infrastructure, because if you lose the information of your customers, you will be dead in your business in a matter of days."

I am glad Lopez mentioned security. This is a critical component that must be addressed and included in the strategic plan for using digital technology. Customers want answers in seconds in real-time and they don't want excuses that a server is down or something else is wrong. Blah!Blah!Blah!

Customers want on demand serivce 24/7 and companies that are not moving towards then will be left behind or bought out.
