What does YouTube have lined up in regards to 4K content? I agree, more of a forward looking, defensive move at this point.

@Mike yes, perhaps they believe, if you build the platform for it, the content will then be made to utilize it.

@Ariella - the old "if you build it, they will come" thesis. I guess that is true, and perhaps has to be for a company focused on new technology -- you have to be ahead of the market a little, maybe even try and direct its development if you want to succeed with new technology. And they've certainly got the $$$ to invest, even if its a long game.

Re: content
I am wondering if the average YouTube user would even want 4K right now?  I know that I mostly use YouTube to listen to music and I don't need my data taken up by a 4K version of an embarassing '90s song.

I guess what I am saying is that I get what you are saying, but I am not sure that they will come if you build it.  This is a situation where Youtube needs to take a hard look at what content is actually being streamed before they drop cash into 4K.

@afwriter I'm inclined to agree with you. I think, though, that they may argue for the other side by saying you can't wait to see what people stream; you have to build the platform that will shape what they will want to see.

Re: content
@Ariella on the other hand is always nice to have the options... in my mind good example of options would be GoPro cameras line from basic SD under $99 to 4K for $500... some people have two or three GoPros... - consumers wanna choices to have... :) human nature...

@batye those people with multiple GoPros, do they just upgrade or do they use the three simultaneously? I can see some utility in multiple cameras if you want to make a video that picks up differnt perspectives. It would be more visually interesting than having only one.

@batye I see. So each has its own function. That does suggest that some should come up with GoPros that could combine all the functions in one without costing as much as 3 different ones.

@Ariella - not GoPro they keep changing camera option adding some new features but removing other... almost like an Apple - game... sad... now many people stop buying GoPro and buy knockoffs from China with all features and options all in one Sport Waterproof/schockproof Camera with Car evidence DVR build in by design under $99... it GoPro loss....

I could tell you my fight with GoPro :) over missing accessory adapter out of the new box.. if you interested to listen :)

Re: content
We are just at the dawn of 4K and many consumers don't even have devices capable of true 4K yet.  I find it odd that Youtube would make this move, but maybe it has a little to do your everday YouTube star and more to do with the budding original content on Youtube Red.

Re: content
@afwriter - perhaps you are right - this isn't as much a social media play as a push to live event coverage. The launch of the 4K live streaming service was live streaming the 2016 Game Awards, which would support your argument.

Most of Facebook will be video in 2020? Wow, that's going to make the site even less desirable to visit than it is now!

Really, the photos have been enough. But to see video all the time? We'll see how users feel about that...

@dcawrey Ugh. I liked it when few people posted video online. I have been seeing a surprising number of people using Facebook live recently. I have only watched one or two of those videos. I find I'm not that interested in the stuff people film. Perhaps they're doing it for far off loved ones who do care...

@Michelle I'm one of those people who doesn't care to watch videos for every headline, though everyone seems to get data that suggests my preferences are the exception rather than the rule. I recall one CDO said that after discovering that FB favored videos made specifically for its platform over links to YouTube that they adjusted their social media strategy accordingly and put up a lot more FB videos.

@Ariella I guess data didn't reflect my usage of video on facebook. I have only bothered to watch recorded versions of a few events (very short videos both times). Have you noticed auto-play video on mobile? You can turn it off, but it's pretty awful until you do.

@Michelle - I have found that unless the video starts auto-playing to catch my attention, I won't go out of my way to watch it.  If it grabs me in the first few seconds, I'll click it to get the sound and watch until the end, but I don't think I've ever watched a video without "screening" it first!

I'm the same way. It takes a lot to grab my attention but if it does I watch the whole thing until the end.

Re: content
@vnewman really? I find autoplay such a turnoff that I tend to just shut it down, no matter what it is. In gneral, though, I only want to watch a video that I'm looking to watch -- not something that some search algorithm thinks I want to watch.

YouTube Launches Live Streaming in 4K
This article about YouTube supporting live streaming in 4K up to 60FPS is a very strong business move and will bring more money/satisfaction to YouTube. I totally agree with the other comments this is a good decision for alot of YouTubers like me. I just wonder how in the future it will compare to Snapchat live, Facebook live, and alot more live systems.
