What does YouTube have lined up in regards to 4K content? I agree, more of a forward looking, defensive move at this point.

@Mike yes, perhaps they believe, if you build the platform for it, the content will then be made to utilize it.

YouTube Launches Live Streaming in 4K
This article about YouTube supporting live streaming in 4K up to 60FPS is a very strong business move and will bring more money/satisfaction to YouTube. I totally agree with the other comments this is a good decision for alot of YouTubers like me. I just wonder how in the future it will compare to Snapchat live, Facebook live, and alot more live systems.

Re: content
We are just at the dawn of 4K and many consumers don't even have devices capable of true 4K yet.  I find it odd that Youtube would make this move, but maybe it has a little to do your everday YouTube star and more to do with the budding original content on Youtube Red.

@afwriter - perhaps you are right - this isn't as much a social media play as a push to live event coverage. The launch of the 4K live streaming service was live streaming the 2016 Game Awards, which would support your argument.

@Ariella - the old "if you build it, they will come" thesis. I guess that is true, and perhaps has to be for a company focused on new technology -- you have to be ahead of the market a little, maybe even try and direct its development if you want to succeed with new technology. And they've certainly got the $$$ to invest, even if its a long game.

Re: content
I am wondering if the average YouTube user would even want 4K right now?  I know that I mostly use YouTube to listen to music and I don't need my data taken up by a 4K version of an embarassing '90s song.

I guess what I am saying is that I get what you are saying, but I am not sure that they will come if you build it.  This is a situation where Youtube needs to take a hard look at what content is actually being streamed before they drop cash into 4K.

@afwriter I'm inclined to agree with you. I think, though, that they may argue for the other side by saying you can't wait to see what people stream; you have to build the platform that will shape what they will want to see.

Most of Facebook will be video in 2020? Wow, that's going to make the site even less desirable to visit than it is now!

Really, the photos have been enough. But to see video all the time? We'll see how users feel about that...
