Re: Grand schemes
@dmendyk - That's interesting that AWS is such a big thing for Amazon, it isn't even a service I really use from them and I'm a bit of an Amazon freak. (Obviously they have more than just me for a customer, I just think it's interesting.)

Re: OTT Advantage
I agree. Until recently I'd say it's more because I tend to prefer my Apple TV and Amazon isn't an option on there, but I finally got around to watching on my kindle and I really find the way they mix in the included, free content with the content you need to rent or buy annoying. :-/

Re: Amazon touring
Is the show available in the U.S.? I would like to see the statistics of the viewing audience for the type of show in the U.S. versus other countries.

How will this new show impact Amazon streaming costs?

U.S. subscribers are always looking to find the lowest price for cable tv and streaming services and I would be curious to see those willing to pay $99 to view this new service and the new tv show.

Re: Amazon touring
I am curious why Amazon would spent so much money on one tv show.

Due to the increasing popularity of the president election it is not surprising that the founder made racist comments.

To remain successful Amazon will have to ensure that employees are provided with diversity training.

Re: OTT Advantage
@faryl, @afwriter - This should be a concern for them. Navigation/UI/personalization/reccomendation - this is becoming really critical. Even pay-TV providers are putting a lot of developmental effort into improving this experience. Given that Amazon was the first company to really invest in taking the hassle out of online shopping, you would think they would really target this area. There's no point having the largest library if no one can find anything there.

Re: OTT Advantage
I agree about the UI. I've been a Prime customer for years, and always forget that Amazon's an option for watching content, then when I do, it seems like a hassle.

Re: Grand schemes
Amazon's profitability was dodgy until AWS took off. AWS is where the profit is for Amazon. The consumer businesses are high volume, low profit. Nothing wrong with that, but AWS makes the whole picture much brighter.

Re: Grand schemes
<Ignore stuff like profit margins and sustainability, and somehow things will work out.>

@mendyK it did start out that way, which made me wonder how long it did take to get profitable. I dug this out: http://abcnews.go.com/Business/story?id=87393

But there was no doubt about the fourth quarter of 2001: Driven by an extraordinary burst in the Christmas shopping season (apparently there was more fear of bombs at Borders than anthrax in Amazon boxes), Amazon finally crossed over into the Land of the Black Numbers.

I wonder how much Amazon pays for shill posts. Holidays are coming up, and GI Joe with the kung fu grip is getting more expensive.

Re: Grand schemes
Amazon is the best and best website to look for things and then for them touring across countries is ideal for them which mean more folks will know who they are and more money.
