Re: Security a Big Concern for State CIOs
I didn't know they were ranked first either! I think it's great though. Every company should take security just as serious..

Re: State CIOs
@JohnBarnes, maybe that is the right starting point.  The people with the right knowledge then might recognize what they ought to do and the value of reaching a standard in security.  I'll let you keep the credits!

Re: State CIOs
DHagar, You are giving me credit for more and better thoughts than I have actually thunk. I was just thinking it would be useful to know what sort of people have the job right now. Had not gotten as far as who ought to.

Re: State CIOs
@JohnBarnes, it sounds as if you are raising the issue of standards for State CIO's in security.  That would certainly make more sense than the variables: what I know and seat of the paints of each individual CIO or State standards.

Re: Be afraid!
@faryl, no they did not publicize it much.  It is a strong indication that the "tactical" approaches to security do not take into account the present realities and certainly are inadquate for the future.

Re: State CIOs
@JohnBarnes All of those are good questions. I suppose all that information is kept close to the vest. The state CIO role is an executive IT position, similar to what it is in an enterprise, so I would imagine most of the decisions regarding how data is used come down from them. It probably differs widely from state to state. This is all extremely interesting stuff to research. When you google state CIOs and their roles, there is a plethora of information, but you are correct, it is impossible to gain this information from just one source. Maybe that is something to think about.

Re: State CIOs
srufolo1,

Yes, absolutely. I'm also extremely curious abut

1) what do different states use data (as opposed to received wisdom, seat of the pants, or administrator whim) to decide?

2) how much of a state's data is actually under any kind of supervision by the state CIO?

and most of all,

3) how does all that differ from state to state?

It's sort of amazing that that's not something you can just grab and look up.  Maybe we need a Federal CIO to accumulate reports from .... well, right there you have to decide. 50 states? Plus the district? Plus the commonwealths and territories?

Security a Big Concern for State CIOs
I didn't realize that CIOs had major security more effective. I can't believe that it was ranked first. I leaned alot from this article and helped me with information I didn't know. I agree all the way.

Re: I'll admit I didn't know all states had CIOs
@JohnBarnes, this would indeed shed needed transparency on what exists - although it might be a frightening exercise - but knowledge is key anyway and the risk is not what you know but in what you don't know.
