Re: Piracy Question
I think most people would tend to agree with you. As an aside I saw an old Bryan Adams video the other day from 1992 where he uses his virtual reality device to find some girl he saw in a crowd. It is even more cringe-worthy than the Martian although certainly ahead of its time!

Re: Piracy Question
That's crazy! $20 for twenty minutes? It doesn't seem worth it to me...

Re: Virtual World Reality
Yes, I think so too! Virtualization is really coming full force and it's super exciting to me. I also love the 360 videos!

Re: Piracy Question
@vnewman - Yes, it does sound a bit underwhelming. And The Martian isn't even that major a franchise. But if they are able to do well with it, we'll know that the demand for VR is strong.

Re: Virtual World Reality
When I saw the IMAX announcement, I thought it was totally logical. The company has already been filming things in a wraparound view anyways, so isn't a lot of that probably compatible with smartphone-based headsets? I would think so.

Re: Piracy Question
I hadn't heard about this so I had to look it up.  The reviews are less than stellar for this one.  Apparently it cost $20 for a 20 minute experience performing mundane tasks.  I think the way to go with this is more the Star Wars experience route - use it more as a marketing tool than an end in itself.

Re: Piracy Question
@afwriter - great question. I don't have an answer, but I suspect we're not really there yet when it comes to content protection for VR. I don't know that it would be especially harder to pirate, though. Worth looking into, as it's an important requirement for this to go mainstream.

Piracy Question
"Major movie studio 21st Century Fox is releasing "The Martian VR Experience" today. It is a VR simulation that allows viewers to see Mars from the point-of-view of Matt Damon's character in the 2015 movie. The studio hopes to benefit from the film's recognition as well as its own considerable marketing effort."

@Adi this made me wonder about the proliferation of piracy in Hollywood.  Do you think that VR and 360 videos will be harder to pirate?  I am guessing they are coded differently than traditional films, but I could be wrong.
