Re: telco regulations...
The broad vision is critical--no question--as long as the central focus is not lost.   Trust you agree :)

Re: Telcos Need to Hit Refresh
@freehe, I could not agree more.  And the ability to deploy resources differently to support and advance these transformations is the essential change required in order to truly see these changes take place.

@mpouraryan, possibly they are refocusing their efforts more on a "platform" than one dimension?

Telcos Need to Hit Refresh
"Despite all of the advances CenturyLink has made over the last four years with its NFV and SDN-related improvements, there needs to be more work done at a faster rate and with a greater level of cooperation between service providers of all stripes."

Improvements can occur only as fast as senior executives approve, budgets cover the costs, employees, stakeholders and shareholders buy-in; customer demand increases, and foward-thinking concepts are developed.

Re: telco regulations...
Google seems to be "retreating" somewhat from the TelCo Space.    I wonder how that would factor in to the transformation and how others may rush to "fill the expected void"?

Re: telco regulations...
@mhhf1ve, great points.  I think the "terrestrial satellites" are the answer to the future - once moving beyond the political/financial barriers you point out.  I believe the government may address it sooner rather than later; particularly since they are increasingly heavy users with military use.  So coming up with a commercial strategy in the near future would be to their advantage as well.  On the financial, with Google, etc., they are likely to put together the model system that will make this a commercial success.  Note:  I wouldn't be surprised to see Bezos (Amazon) jump in as well.

Re: telco regulations...
The unavoidable latency times for satellite transmissions make that tech an unlikely replacement for mainstream internet services. But with drones, the latency problem isn't a problem at all -- and these "terrestrial satellites" should be much less expensive and much more upgradeable. The problem is getting the FAA to approve them. (And actually making them cost effective...)

Re: telco regulations...
@mhhf1ve - it is certainly possible.  I heard several years ago that satellite transmissions would replace other options - now with drones and new transmission options, that makes sense.

Re: telco regulations...
I'm also wondering how Google and Facebook's investments in drones (or balloons) that can fly 24/7/365 and potentially act as flying cell towers will pan out. I think at some point, the TV stations that own/use wireless spectrum will forgo their broadcast media and switch to being communication service providers, too.
