Re: telco regulations...
@mhhf1ve, I think you are right about that.  That confirms it is a smart strategy.

If the others don't follow that path, the connections and systems will be established and they will have fewer and fewer opportunities.  A little bit like musical chairs when the music stops.

Re: telco regulations...
I'm sure telcos are always looking for smart investments, but it looks like Google might be beating them to the punch on some.

Re: telco regulations...
@mhhf1ve - that is a great idea.  They aren't going to learn those capabilities over night or change their operations - that would give them the full capabilities for both using their past/existing investments as well as moving into new opportunities.

telco regulations...
It seems like telcos might want to rely on acquiring startups to innovate while avoiding the regulatory traps. Google's Fiber project just bought up some small wireless companies to provide an alternative to last mile fiber... and I'd think telcos might be wise to look into the same kind of strategies.

Telcos can't seem to avoid acting like old telcos without nimble competitors pushing the envelope of tech.

Re: Telco refresh
@clrmoney  agree but I think they need to change the way they plan things - first... it like everything from begining...

Re: Fair point
@Adi - 30 year-old telco rules and 60 year-old telco infrastructure.  Here in California federal and state laws and regulations support an outdated network of old copper landlands that no one even wants anymore.

Re: Telco refresh
@clrmoney, absolutely.  Otherwise, they are spending a lot of time in areas that will decline.  Remaining relevant today is a key challenge but essential, rather than perfecting what we already do.

Re: Fair point
@Adi, that's a key point - that's the reality of the telcos cultures.  We need to align those cultures with the change if we truly want sustainable change.

I think they need to reevaluate what they are doing wrong or go back to improve on some things.

Fair point
<"It's dealing with those 30-year-old telco rules that's difficult,">

It's a more than fair comment, and relevant to far more than just NFV. We often complain about the speed at which Telcos innovate, comparing them to a rash of young technology start-ups with mobile apps and online services. But those organizations aren't constrained by the same regulations that telcos labor under.
