Re: Subsea cables
Oh I had no idea about the installation issues. I think it's great the lengths Africa has gone to have subsea cables. This issue has to be fixed though.

Subsea cables
Althought subsea cables reduce costs but also experience issues.

A critical problem with subsea cables is that installation problems may occur, the cables can easily be broken by natural disaster, sea creatures such as sharks and other factors. In addition, it may take days to cnofirm a fault location. Also, permit repair regulations may cause delays in fixing cable problems.

Africa Subsea Cable
This is great. Africa moves from satellite to terrestial networks to subsea cables to fiber and wifi. Subsea cables are extremely reliable and they have a higher carrying capacity and latency. Subsea cables have touched almost ever continent except Antarctica.

The ability to communicate individually, in groups and as a company is critical to the success and well-being of families, companies, service providers, and medical services.

The future for Africa is exciting.

Here is a map of subsea cable usage globally. http://submarinecablemap.com/

The first subsea cables were installed in the 1850s.

The ESCA maintain subsea cables in European countries. http://www.escaeu.org/

The only US members are Sprint and TE SubCom.

Re: Transit costs
Africa is the next frontier--no doubt.    How that transformation will manifest itself is the question with all the structural and economic challenges it has to overcome is the challenge--isn't it?

Transit costs
Undersea cables are really critical for the development of African broadband services, and it's economy overall. I remember talking to an ISP from New Zealand who said he paid exponentially more in transit costs than he would in western europe or California. The reason was that at the time NZ had (if I remember correctly) just two cables linking it to the rest of the world. The cost of transit was so high, YouTube was basically driving him out of business. Its been fantastic to see the steady increase in Africa's connectivity in recent years, but not sure what kind of IP transit costs ISPs are seeing there today.
