@Carl, excellent points and description of the successful DevOps Culture.  It takes leadership to "refocus" on the end product for the customer and then build and lead the cross-functional teams to engineer and build those products. 

I believe the leaders will be those companies that can develop highly successful DevOps Teams, with the culture you describe.

By hiring developers who have a greater understanding/interest in operations, companies can also benefit by growing them into leaders who thoroughly understand the tech/develpment side as well. There often seems to be a big disconnect on project management teams between product manager expectations for features & delivery times and what developers know is more realistic. This approach should help bridge that.

It also reminds me a bit of the reasoning Microsoft used by having their development teams work in customer support for their products after launch.

I'm not sure if they still do it or if that was more of a "back in the day" type thing. It seemed like Microsoft changed organizational models annually in the early 90s!

Evolved Responsibility to realizing One Office
Good to see DevOps in the spotlight for transformation. They are an important element in the 'outside-in' approach, where they directly impact the 'first touch' of customers when trying out a new service.

I see this as an evolved responsibility (long overdue) which demands the question be asked during all agile product development meetings: "How does this improve my customer's experience or make life easier for them?" Part of a wider customer-centric organisational evolution journey, along which some service providers are already well advanced.

In turn, this can be a step towards making front and back offices transform into 'One Office'. Not something which will happen overnight, but a common transformation mission can facilitate culture and mindset changes necessary to become the trusted digital service provider of choice in any market
