Thanks, Jason. We're out of time so we'll have to wind things up now. Many thanks for a great discussion and for sharing insights in this area. Please do join us on Oct. 6th for our next On-air-Thursday show:

Defining & Implementing Digital Disruptions

Author

Thanks Jason. Seems as though we have been talking about pico cells for years now.

Author

I don't think that HetNets are in wide deployment now. I could be wrong (haven't spoken to many operators about this) but I believe it's a technology that operators are looking at now. And you are right, it's great for areas that are high in population density (like stadiums and Times Square).

I'll go with "b" on the last poll. On the plus side, I will regain control of the remote control from our kids.

Author

No, I don't really have a sense of that split between Wifi offload and actual streaming on cellular networks. When I was at Limelight Networks, we were running some consumer research to try and find an answer to that question. Maybe Sandvine has information about it?

Great poll question. Millennials are definitely driving the video revolution but it's the generation after them (whatever they are called) that will really "seal the deal" for any time, anywhere access. They are already used to watching videos on phones and tablets.

Do you have a sense of the split between wifi offload for video streaming vs. actual streaming on cellular networks, and how that is shifting? What would your expectation be?

Author

How widespread is the use of HetNets? Sound great for stadiums, concerts or Time Square.

Author

I agree with the comment about WiFi Passport. That seems like it would enable a lot of people to consume more video content without incurring dings against their data caps. And the fact that connecting to the WiFi would be transparent and seamless, the consumer would never really know (besides the original authentication).

Here's another poll while Jason answers some questions -

When will mobile become the primary device for video consumption?

a.       Within five years

b.       Within ten years

c.       When millennials are the oldest generation

d.       Never

Author

I think more people would use mobile video if WiFi Passport would be adopted on a greater scale.

Steel

Good question about Netflix and DVD subscriptions. I would think the answer would be yes given their emphasis on the streaming side of their business but, I don't have any hard and fast numbers on it. Something you might be able to Google

Here's another question - Do you foresee an impact from WiFi Passpoint for enabling mobile video?

Author

Good question about value of advertising to operators. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to that. In my opinion, I would think it would be no and perhaps that needs to change in the future.

Fits with the trend Jason talked about.

Author

Looks like people are viewing a lot of mobile video! The winner is e. several times a week.

Author

Hi everyone! Hope you enjoyed the audio portion of the show. Now time for Q&A :)

@Jason you mentioned that the Netflix DVD program had an impact on binge watching...have Netflix DVD subscriptions decreased at all over the past year?

Author

Question for Jason -
Do you think enough of the value of the advertising revenue from video is making it's way to Network Operators to incent them to continue to focus on improvements in the user experience?

Author

Thanks @Jason, @Adi and @Mike!!

Author

We turned off cable at home years ago. Took the savings to bump up the home speed of Internet only to 100 download 5 meg upload.

Here's that information again: Are you a video transformation executive based in Europe that would like to attend our Video Transformation Round Table next week from Sept. 28-29th in Frankfurt? Email me at coyne@lightreading.com to see if you qualify for a VIP invitation to attend this event.

My father in law still gets Netflix by mail. My wife tried to set him up on Apple TV, but so far to no avail.

Author

That's really interesting, never thought of the DVDs as shaping the binge-watching behavior.

Author

Pls put in any questions you have for Jason.

Author

@Jared He also delivered a great course on Video: Boosting Customer Experience at Upskill U with Alan Breznick.

Author

I think my company's network is blocking the streaming content.

Looking at streamingvideoalliance.org website on both chrome and firefox and it does not load properly or looks incomplete.  Big empty white space below drop-down bar followed by empty news and events icons.  Is anyone else experiencing this?  Speedtest says my net connection working just fine.

had to log in again to answer first question.  My answer is never

Steel

Depends on what video. Advertisement? every day.  Short or long-form video? several times/week.

Steel

Aside of the tech, who owns the customer? If I'm Comcast, I get complaints when Netflix doesn't work right (although now partners). And good point about the constant influx of new devices.

Author

@Michelle and @professor Audio good on my end, I'm using Chrome.

Author

I love my smart TV! I prefer the "quality of experience" of the smart TV over Apple TV. What platforms do others on the chat use? Thoughts on say a smart TV versus Apple TV, Roku, etc?

Author

I'm having issues loading audio. Anyone else?

Platinum

@Adi interesting point/question :)

Platinum

1.      How often do you view video on your mobile phone?

a.      Never

b.      < once a month

c.      2-3 times a month

d.      Every week

e.      Several times a week

Author

Audio has started now.

Looking forward to the event!

Hello All.

I looking for a practice based comparation between delivery video streams as a OTT and multicast from effectiveness IP bandwidth and QoE in radio access systems.

Is anyone who tested MMDS or MWS in live for video and data transmission ?

Steel

Great to see you all signed up for this. Looking forward to a great show.

Author

Hmmm..@mhhf1ve, Great question - lets put that to Jason on Thursday.

Author

I've noticed that streaming content is usually decent quality (without buffering or lengthy pauses or pixelation, etc), but pre-roll or interstitial video ads are annoyingly less smooth -- adding additional pauses or disruption to the enjoyment of the content that I actually wanted to see. Anyone else have this problem?

Platinum

Greetings & salutations all!

Steel

I will  be there as well

Steel

Planning on it.  Thanks.

Steel

Just writing up some great questions for Jason. His role at the center of the developing eco-system will give him an interesting perspective.

Author

Hello to all :)

Platinum

Hope to attend - should be interesting :)

Platinum

I'm looking forward to learning more about research findings and how they will improve video delivery in the future.

Platinum

looking forward to it.

Platinum

looking foward to this radio show!
