Re: What ifs
@elizabethtv - they seem to have figured out the right formula to create hits. They use a lot of customer data to develop new show concepts, apparently. So in theory they might argue there is less risk than in traditional TV, because they have more insight to base their development plans. And certainly looking at the most viewed OTT shows, Netflix has the most in the top 10. HBO's GoT, of course, rules by miles. But that's just one show.

Re: What ifs
@afwriter - Exactly...the strategy has worked so far, and frankly I don't see another option. But the relentless financial pressure this is going to put on subscriber adds for the next five years is pretty scary.

Netflix Double Down
Netflix has a lot to offer with their services so if they need to double down for more revenue then so be it.

Re: What ifs
afwriter - But their Disney rights came with a bit of a hitch - it's only for the newer movies. Which may still help them do well, but it isn't for all of the Disney movies, which was at one time reported, or at least, alluded to. Nonetheless, their original content has done them well. Making a Murderer is a great example of this, it was arguably one of the biggest releases last year. They are set on a working on the second, which will likely happen soon, given Brendan Dassey's release from jail lately.

Re: What ifs
Oh dear - I'm with you @afwriter - very risky strategy.  Time to sell that Netflix stock.

What ifs
There are so many what ifs here:

What if all of the original content falls flat?

What if customers get annoyed with too much original content?

What if it does not generate any new revenue and the company takes a huge financial hit?

The good news is that they have delivered so far with at least a handful of very popular shows, Stranger Things being the newest hit.  Along with their Disney rights acquisition, I have a feeling that they will be posting positive gains.
