Re: Is real-time data that much better?
Good points and I agree! I think being able to actually get an accurate count about what content people are consuming would be an interesting change.

Re: Is real-time data that much better?
@afwriter - this is a great point. I have often wondered if there were niche's being completely ignored by advertisers and producers because they weren't a part of the people they tended to try to appeal to. There could potentially be an entire demographic of people who would be interested in a product or television show or movie and they are completely missed. This might allow those people to gain a voice in the marketplace - per se.

Re: Is real-time data that much better?
@Adi - I suppose you're probably right. The vocal minority over the silent majority. Though as a proud, card carrying "I hate Megan Fox" fan, I can't imagine who thinks the show is better with her. So I find it easier to identify with the vocal minority... i.e. it's entirely possible I've at least once or twice been a part of that crowd.

@mhhf1ve - I think a lot of broadcast and cable executives will take that! These are the people who gave us reality TV.

Real time audience measurement probably won't make the shows any better but the data might make the shows more profitable.

Re: Is real-time data that much better?
@elizabethv - I wonder if the message boards are a good representation of the viewer base in this case. The Internet can be misleading, where a handful of "noisy" people can make it seem that the majority opinion is a certain way. But the network is probably looking at ratings numbers and surveys across a broader audience and then taking a decision.

Re: Is real-time data that much better?
@mhhf1ve - Ya, I definitely  think you have a point. For a scripted show there isn't much you can do mid-show. But it seems this will provide more granular data than in the past, i.e., producers will know when in a show viewrship dipped, more prescisely than existing estimates. That could be useful for developing future scripts potentially - don't kill off the pretty heroine in gory fashion, we'll lose audience. Or, more likely, DO kill off the pretty heroine in gory fashion.

And of course, for live studio shows and reality TV etc., there's a lot more value, at least in theory. Anyway, I'm an analyst at heart - for me, more data is better even if it isn't immediately applicable

I can't wait for a substantial amount of "real time" data to be collected.  Knowing what everyone is watching instead of just the nuclear family could drastically change the statistics we have seen.

Re: Is real-time data that much better?
My thoughts on your contradicting thoughts..

I think some of my best shows were killed off by "micromanagement" of the show runners. Some shows do much better left alone without a feedback loop from the audience.

eg. Freaks & Geeks was a great show, and it probably was better because the writers knew the show was going to be canceled about halfway through the frist season -- so they did the stories they wanted to do to make the show they wanted (not what the audience wanted or what the studio wanted).
