Re: DevOps Potholes
@mpouraryan, well there you go - exactly!  We want new benefits and new opportunities without risk - so we are holding on to the limits of what already exists.

The leaders will be those who truly create the future!

Re: Reflogging my favorite horse
@JohnBarnes, data analytics software has truly opened up new opportunities for DevOps.  I believe we haven't even scratched the surface on the what can now be accomplished.

As always, well stated!

Re: DevOps Potholes
Isn't that what, in fact, Transformation is supposed to be?  We have to risk--but it appears that the Poll indicates otherwise.

Reflogging my favorite horse
Because I'm really not totally sure he's dead yet ...

A model very like DevOps is already there in some of the contemporary data-science oriented programming languages, most notably R.  If I've got a gigantic database, and R and the skills for it (and a machine fast and capacious enough), you can ask almost anything and if the answer is latent in the database, I can hand type a sequence of commands, executing each as I go, and get you that one-time answer. If you ask me the same question several times in a row, I can go back to my recordings of my process, paste directly from the recordings into an executable file, and voila! program.

Or in short, all the work I did on the one-off version (which is ops) is immediately transferable to the now-to-be-standard-forever app (which is dev).

It should be added that this works brilliantly in practice.

DevOps is just the rest of the industry catching up with data analytic software ... another case of a good trick that proves extremely contagious.

Devops
Devops has a lot to offer like mobile video data etc. So I'm not surprised they are in the lead.

Re: DevOps Potholes
@Mike, great insight and analysis.  I agree that there are potholes and that we are making "incremental" progress but stopping short of true transformation to new solutions that fully integrate development and operations.  It is as if we are still developing with the same designs and wanting a different result.

You have identified one key barrier, the culture.  The other is the "new learning" that has to take place to truly integrate the knowledge in both and design a true DevOps solution - which is more optimal.

I think this also confirms that we are still deploying technology from a sole capability standpoint, and missing the opportunity to deliver new solutions - that can only take place through true DevOps.  We want to swim the ocean without leaving shore.
