$$$
That is an awful lot of money, but it seems like they know what they are doing. It will be interesting to see if Telstra becomes an example or a cautionary tale.

Re: $$$
I would argue @batye that it has to make business sense--but the payoff is there if the risk is to be taken. Do you agree?

Re: $$$
@mpouraryan thank you :) but in my books risk must be always calculated risk :) not a gamble of choice...

@batye and that's where data comes into play, making one aware of the calculations and the odds.

Re: $$$
Well, but it looks like it is playing with the house's money with the profits from it's sale of its stake in the Chinese "Autohome." So in that light, it makes much more sense.

Re: $$$
Here is the thing @batye: being cautious is not the receipe for progress. It is a struggle that I have personally with my current startup about whether the time, effort & sweat is worth it--but there is no other way. Otherwise, frankly, we would not be where we are now would we?

Re: $$$
@batye - according to the article, this risk seems calculated, at least to some extent. "The operator believes the $3 billion ($2.31 billion) investment will eventually lead to better capital efficiency, reduced operating costs and an increase in revenues."
I think most risks are even if only slightly, calculated. Generally people are aware of the consequences of the risks they take, they just come up with a way to be okay with the consequence, should their plans fail. As long as you can find a way to weather the storm, no matter what may come, taking the risk should always seem worth it.

Re: $$$
@afwriter it does sound like a lot, though for companies like Apple, it represents only 1% of its cash reserves. For those that are not quite as cash rich, it does require some careful review to be certain of ROI.

..the pay off on automation is profound--I was dealing with AT&T Today and the VOIP automated system blew me away on how smart it was and I was able to finalize the business. What I suggesting, in effect, is that the fear has to be less and less.
What am I missing here?

Next-gen networks are certainly where the future lies. Spending $2.3 billion is no small number, but I would argue that there's really no alternative. The network of the future is flexible and digital. That's where we are at today.
