Legacy vs. DevOps
IMHO, there's nothing inherently wrong w/ being tied to legacy.

But if you're not, get on board with a good DevOps model -- because there's where your next dollars are coming from.

Re: Legacy vs. DevOps
Joe,

Very well put. In a technophile forum like this one, we too often forget that the existence of large, deeply embedded legacy systems often indicates past success and well-established (often at great cost and difficulty) market position, which should not lightly be thrown away because a software engineer saw something cool at a conference. On the other hand, the potential for better systems is there, with a large amount of unexplored territory in DevOps, whereas a good legacy system is probably about as good as it can ever get -- its possibilities are already explored and exploited. The trick is to find the transition time of maximum advantage; it isn't always "now" and it isn't always "much later (polite expression for 'never') when everything is worked out (i.e. never)," though it could be.

DevOps Not New
DevOps is not a new concept, many companies have been using the process for years long before the SDLC methodologies Agile or SCRUM were invented.

The technology industry likes to rename concepts and market them as something new. History repeats itself again with DevOps.

Re: Legacy vs. DevOps
@Joe Stanganelli, good point Joe. I think companies with legacy systems have to a find a balance between remaining competitive, keeping operational costs low and innovation.

Companies may want to retire their legacy systems but the cost to do so could be expensive.

Companies could take a phased approach and implement Dev Ops slowly into their strategic plan. The ROI would be less and could even break even.

Saved from legacy
I wonder how many project mishaps could be avoided by switching away from the legacy model. An integrated approach could save much in the end.
