Too many cooks
I get the idea but I feel like there would be too many companies vying for their piece of the pie.  There is also the issue of monopolization, even though they would be seperate compnaies they would only be offering a single service that they could charge whatever they want for.

Re: Too many cooks
A single provider with billable a la carte would probably have less choices (as stockholders/taxpayers would insist that the less-profitable channels shut down) but it would be fairly easy to do, even with tweaks to allow for browsing and free trials. It would, however, mean creating the media monopoly to end all media monopolies, and I doubt anyone in North America or the Anglosphere will go for it for just that reason.

Give it time
I think the point you make about the cost of multiple OTT plays adding up is most important. At some point users will get as frustrated with OTT providers as they have with pay TV rates. Then we might see the herd thin a little, and also become more open to working with an aggregator, whether its a pay TV provider or a pure OTT aggregator. Right now, the tide is rising. There aren't enough losers to force collaboration/partnerships.

Re: Too many cooks
I guess another way to look at it would be, if we wanted to pay ridiculous prices for the exact same content that everyone else has, we wouldn't have gone OTT to begin with and just stuck with cable/satellite providers.

Re: Too many cooks
afwriter, "Economics abhors a money pump" -- a money pump being defined as any situation where everyone spends money to eventually reach the status quo ante.

I've never been sure whether that's true in the realm of tech adoption, however.

Re: Too many cooks
So there's really no hope for an easier solution for consumers? A la carte content will continue as is until all providers play nice? I don't see that happening ever.

Re: Too many cooks
Michelle, that's where I have my doubts that a money pump can't happen in the real world. Too many things -- election cycles, fashion, entertainment trends -- look like money pumps to me. So I'm not at all sure there can't be a stable effective market version of a la carte content, whether the economists like it or not.
