Re: Netflix is also benefitting from the social media cycle
Ariella,

Yep. Time was when tribes of kids self-organized around music, or less-so comic books or some literary genres. There's now very clearly a great deal of neo-tribalism around movies and especially around ongoing shows.

(Favorite detail: several dating sites now have little binary checkboxes that are supposed to sort basic types of people: cats/dogs, thin crust/thick crust, beach/mountains, etc., and the ones that have that have begun adding Wars/Trek (the "Star" is implied)).

@johnbarnes the social media conversations extend even beyond real life conversations. I know that for kids in school, talk about shows in common is how some identify their groups. Adults do that less in real life (I think) but they do participate in discussions about the shows they follow online.

Netflix is also benefitting from the social media cycle
Watching TV and movies is much more social than it used to be (and it was always pretty social). One reason to watch is to be able to talk about what you saw with friends/neighbors/acquaintances -- in other words, to create some traffic in your social network because traffic maintains the social network you need.  If more shows are on Netflix, more people watch it because it gives you access to more conversations (and of course those conversations are where you hear about new shows).  The bigger it gets, the more advantages there are to having it; the more advantages, the more people sign up.

Re: Netflix down a little
Ariella: the "impressive amount of progress" is just an artifact of the measurement and doesn't really require an explanation. The comparison is between rankings. Netflix has a bit more than twice as much downstream traffic share as #2 YouTube (35.15 versus 17.53).  The next eight in the list, beginning with Amazon Video, are all packed together between 4.3 and 1.7. So picturing  a horse race, Netflix wins by many lengths, YouTube places by being between the winner and the pack behind it (though closer to the pack), and Amazon Video shows because they are at the front of a very tight pack. It's a runaway.

Rankings and shares are both dubious ways to report gains, and combining them like this makes it all nearly meaningless.  Netflix is the biggest by far. Out of the non-Netflix downstream shares, YouTube has the biggest by far. Everyone else is packed up, way, way back, and maneuvers within the pack are insignficant in the overall scheme of things.

Re: Netflix down a little
As I am walking away, I am watching "West Wing' on Netflix :)

Beyond that, though, Here is one thing that should give somewhat of a heart to those who may want a "redo":

I agree! It should definitely be an option and I'm not sure why it isn't. I think it would become so much more popular if they joined up with them.

Re: Netflix down a little
I think the fact that Amazon's not an option on my Apple TV makes it a less-appealing option for me. It takes too many extra steps or I have to watch on a significantly smaller screen (iPhone or fire vs. a TV), so I have to be really motivated to use if.

Re: Netflix down a little
Brexit hasn't fully sunk in yet for me - I've been having trouble wrapping my mind around the massive shifts in the global (and domestic) political landscapes and I'm realizing that at one point, citizens of countries with governments that we view as dictatorships or had coups took their country's stability for granted like we (or at least I) do. An uplifting documentary on Netflix sounds like a good idea right now!

My friend is leaving for a trip for Europe next week and did not know that you could watch Amazon prime stuff offline. So you've improved her travel experience as well!
