Re: Smart Cities
Good points! I am curious too! How do they pick the cities that would make good smart cities? Is it only going to be smaller cities in the beginning? Or cities with a larger population? Either way I'm anxious to see how these cities will turn out!

Re: Smart Cities
What is critical to note is that elements of it are already in place.   The question is whether who has the backbone to pull it all together and execute.    I am not seeing that in the cards right now.

thoughts?

Re: Resources
The frequency that traffic timing gets reviewed is almost useless. All it takes is a Target or movie theater of the development of a "walkable area" to change the needs. I'd think it could be rather easy to use technology to Identify and address congested areas.

Re: Smart Parking
I like San Diego's new meters that take credit cards. I'm not sure how smart they are though.

@jbtombes what was the effect of being bumped into the next bracket? Do you mean that you had to pay for 2 hours because the meter only works off whole hours?

Re: Smart Parking
Was in Boston last month - paid for an hour of parking (one hour plus two minutes, so bumped into the next bracket) than ever in my life. I'd guess there is more chance of greater efficiency in parking than lighting - as a commercial vs. government enterprise.

Smart Cities
This is great if a proper and efficient strategy is used to develop smarter cities. It would be great to use this technology on smaller cities and localties which often get let behind in all aspects (public services, internet service, cell phone number, cable service, etc.).

I am also curious as to how they select cities that will be transformed into smarter cities.

It would be great if they have a drawing or contest where each city provides a justification why they should be selected to become a smart city.

We have to change the way we do business--that's the message I am taking away.    Why the resistance continues to be baffling.

Re: Resources
Sounds to me like fixing a city asset is terribly inefficient. Using IoT to help reduce the need for manual inspection and analysis is just one thing I think can be done with this technology.

Smart Parking
Smart parking definitely seems to have its benefits, but it will have monetary draw backs.  I guarantee that the cost of implimenting smart parker will be passed on to the driver.  I am luck enough to live in an area where parking is free almost everywhere, but when I drive into the bigger cities and have to park I know it is already ridiculously expensive, I can't imagine how much it will be when smart tech is added to the equation.
