Re: Virtuality
Interesting idea @freehe - we had to that with Tivo/DVR technology when that first came out. Had to be integrated into set-tops before consumers saw the value and demand came about.

Re: Virtuality
This is interesting technology, "enter a virtual living room where they can select from programs on a screen while sitting on a sofa."

I would like to see the statistics about user interest for VR. It sounds promising but many promising technologies failed. Also, I don't see any benefits of the technology to the user. What is the cost justification for customers paying for the service?

They should probably employ a 90 day trial period for VR.

Re: Virtuality
@dcawrey You mean like a virtual concert, that kind of thing? I could see that working. In fact if I was a record label executive, I'd be all over it. Online music hasn't been kind to the record labels and concerts have been a major source of revenue. So any way in which they could digitize the experience and help a secondary market would be useful. And I don't think it would compete with live ticket sales.

Many thanks for your thoughts, BTW. Great to see ideas shared on the site.

Re: Virtuality
Great conversation going here.

I would argue that VR does change some experiences. Live events are an example. For a lot of people, going to live events is a major hassle. VR eliminates a lot of that. I think at some point there will be huge opportunity there, but perhaps not for regular TV viewing.

Re: Virtuality
I think there's a concern it may go the way of 3D as a home technology, for many of the same reasons. The headsets are a challenge, as dcawrey points out, just as the glasses were for 3G. Personally I don't think TV will be substantially altered by VR, I think it's about understanding where it adds value and where it's distracting from the video narrative. So navigation is interesting (as with Com Hem) and sports, as with Eurosports and Fox. It'll have very much a complementary, targeted kind of role in the video business I think. And totally agree its going to take a while, you can tell from the cautious tone used by everyone.

Used right though...it's pretty cool!
