Re: BCE
@JohnBarnes, well said.

I also believe that where technology is becoming a tool for building information/asset and solving problems, as opposed to solely "purchase orders" for acquiring technology, this may help advance the transition.

I will keep my eyes open for the millionaires and send them your way.

Thanks.

Re: BCE
DHagar, I haven't the slightest idea what the numbers are like.  I just observe that there are places where old-style cronyism is still practiced, but not as many as there used to be, and places where it seems unthinkably quaint, and the former are dwindling and the latter are growing. But where we are in the changeover, whether we're almost done or just starting on the process -- no idea.

Hint to any wandering billionaires: I could have a very good idea within a year or two, for just a few of those millions you may already have laying around the house.

Re: BCE
@JohnBarnes, like the term "vendor prisons"!

Good analysis - what percentage of existing IT contracts do you believe have moved away from that and what percentage do you think are trapped in prison still?

@ms.akkineni, excellent!  I think that is the "best" medicine.  Everything else we develop is an artificial second-best.  We would probably be healthier if we stayed with nature's own.

Thanks for sharing!

Re: BCE
Wow, that's something new and sounds interesting. Is the idea to over do on purpose so you can start feeling not to touch sugar things for a while?

@Mike as a Texas native, I'm always pleased to hear the food is great in Austin. It's been many years since I visited. I'm glad the conference went well.

Re: BCE
dcawrey,

How many "vendor prisons" are actually created by older business management still practicing crony capitalism? It used to be that one way to secure a permanent high place in a pyramid was to become the trusted connection to an indispensable vendor, and a great number of almost-always-men who had the combination of silver hair, good suits, and the ability to re-make exactly the same decision for decades were able to "retire upward" into those relationships. ("We have to have IBM and thank god Dave is here to handle our relationship with them!") This also meant vendor salesforces were there to help protect, defend, and enhance their positions.

That old model of cronyism, as you point out, is really dead. If Good Old Dave signs a 20 year contract in hopes of having a soft job looking after the relationship, in 3 years he'll be that nitwit that saddled us with the company that is now obsolete, overpriced, non-standard, and possibly acquired by the enemy.

Re: BCE
Funny how that happens.

Whenever I feel like my sugar consumption is getting a bit too much, I eat a bunch of ice cream and candy for a day which usually seems to "reset" my eating patterns the next day (post sugar-crash).

Re: BCE
"Vendor prison" is an interesting term. Sure, there are numerous vendors who want to lock organizations into products and services. Yet I would argue given the way technology changes it's pointless to enter into long-term agreements.
