Poll: 5G technology and services will...
  • Arrive in the 2020 timeframe, as many experts originally suggested.
  • Arrive at an accelerated pace due to competitive pressures.
  • Arrive early in name only—the early services won't be true 5G (but, rather, "faux G")
  • Arrive later than anticipated.

Pls. answer and comment below.

Re: Poll: 5G technology and services will...
I think that whether it arrives earlier or later, it would close enough to the target mark for the forecast to be proven, or not, depending on one's agenda. In other words, the signs of 5G that appear prior to 2020 can be taken to mean a faster arrival to fit a more bullish report. On the other hand, those who want to say it's not all that would likely be able to point out areas where it has not arrived even well into 2020.

Arrive at an accelerated pace due to competitive pressures.  I believe it is so revolutionary that the move forward to 5G will truly transform the industry - driving further change.

..and it is driven by what Steve Case is referring to as "The Third Wave"--listening in on a conference call that Steve Case spoke at.    It is stunning and yet fascinating at the same time!!.

@cweinsch, thanks!  That's why  I think it will be sooner - as it will leave other solutions in the dust.

Provacative queston. My answer: Later than expected.  The telcos are still battling with each other establish a global standard and lobbying for their own technologies over their rivals - this could take years and years to define.

@vnewman. I agree. It seems, however, that progress is accelerating. But, as I mentioned to @ariella, that is perhaps due to the PR departments.

The competitive pressures at hand will drive home the simple yet profound fact that it is critical for the adoption to happen--it is the "fierce urgency of now" that wouljd drive home this.   2020 is simply too late!!!

Fathom Neural Computer Stick - this sounds pretty cool. I will be interested to keep an eye when Movidius is ready to get out first 1000 devices as part if their first phase deployment.

  • Arrive later than anticipated.

Did 3G, 4G, etc.. arrive "on time" as scheduled? I don't think wireless deployment has a great track record with so many flavors of it being promoted before being "accepted" as a standard protocol....

@mhhf1ve: It certainly is a gradual process, that's for sure. I think that the dynamic here is that there is so much new stuff in 5G versus the fact that the industry is generally getting better at developing new tech. It will be interesting.

5G Catch Up
  • Arrive at an accelerated pace due to competitive pressures.

I would say 'Race Up' is the name of the game here. Everyone is just trying to push thsi out asap, though there could be issues for the first cut around. But that is not going to stop or make these mobile companies slow down. Instead they would be out with a version which would later be refined.

I wonder how T-Mobile is planning 5G...We didn't get to hear them here.

Re: 5G Catch Up
@Akkineni...Good point, and very reminescent of the birth of cable's involvement in data. They rushed a fast generation and subsequently started the DOCSIS program. First moves into a space are very valuable.

Excited
Personally, I'm just excited to see what's to come with 5G. There's been so much talk about it and I'm hoping my expectations haven't been blown up too big! But I really think 5G is going to be a game changer.

Another driving factor ...
Not mentioned so far, is straightforward old-fashioned planned obsolescence.  Some genuinely new and useful applications will need 5G to go mobile (and will need to be fully mobile). Most won't, and existing applications by definition get along without it. But this is a field where market saturation is always looming, and scheduled obsolescence is one reliable way to prevent it. The interesting problem is that the cost of obsolescence keeps going up; vastly more R&D is needed to make 5G better enough than 4G to drive people to change over, whereas 3G was a much bigger leap (and thus bigger pressure) for a much smaller investment.

Ariella, I think most tech change costs enough to force at least a few firms off the field and as the tech gets higher and price per increment rises exponentially, this will only become more acute.

5G Telco
5G may widen the gap between the leaders, niche players, challengers and visionaries. I am excited that 5G is being developed. I am concerned about what security measures if any will be implemented. Also, What will be the cost to customers? With each new product or service customers have to pay higher and higher fees. I want new technology but not it will cost me the same a car payment.

Re: 5G Telco
That's the one thing I'm worried about with 5G. I'm hoping that the prices aren't super high. I know that 5G is going to be something great. I just hope the prices are somewhere where everyone can enjoy 5G.
