Re: Google Access
Fiber is expensive, it will be interesting to see if they meet their goal. Google is a leader and continues to force other companies to improve.

Faster internet is what all customers want.

Re: Google Access
Thanks Jonathan. He said the goal was to have 100 train stations live by the end of the year. Half a million people pass through some of the stations a day, so that's a lot of WiFi use.

Re: Google Access
The partner in this case being India RailTel, which laid fiber along rail lines about a dozen years ago. (Reminds me of MCI.) Seems like a logical collaboration. What Google brings is access points, the cloud-based evolved packet core (EVP) control plane and the OSS - the latter being key as you mentioned, Mike.

Re: Google Access
@dcawrey, excellent assessment.  They really have invested a great deal in the fiber networks.  I will be interested to see how they position themselves to remain the leader and get the returns from those investments.  They are a smart company, they will find a way.

Re: Google Access
In terms of broadband markets, I think Google has found with its Fiber initiative how hard it is to make inroads on infrastructure to service customer. This is why I think they are open to the idea of partnering with companies that have vast experience in that. Whatever Google needs to do to get faster internet to their users, they will ultimately do.

Re: Google Access
Among other things, Lin said Google was a firm believer that operations and software OSS were inseparable. I was a bit surprised that he said Google was willing to partner with incumbent players in under served broadband markets.

Google Access
Looks like a balloon in Geng Lin's presentation (slide 5) so must be part of Google Access, the emerging markets initiative of Alphabet that's considering balloons as well as fiber and terrestrial wireless (as in the India train station deployment) at a way to reach new consumers. Love the juxtaposition of 200+ year-old tech with more recent inventions.
