Skeptical
I am genuinely not convinced that Comcast can do anything to prevent themselves from becoming obsolete within the next decade. There are too many alternatives continuing to pop up and that mixed with their already poor reputation is a recipe for disaster.

Re: Skeptical
I really have to agree with afwriter here, especially because the things that the Comcast people are citing as "new culture" that they have to adapt to are mostly things that have been true in the development environments since the late 90s. They're waking up to the revolution that already happened without them.
Re: Skeptical
Well, if nothing else, Comcast does have a large network of broadband pipes across the nation, so I don't see that business going away. It's hard for me to imagine the nation's largest ISP and cable operator vanishing entirely from the landscape. I know they've been working on a lot of this for years now. Here's an article I wrote a few years ago on Comcast's Viper platform.

Re: Skeptical
I read an article the other day that could be summed up as "more and more young people are leaving traditional mobile for over the air 4G boxes."
Re: Skeptical
I'm not discounting the trend of "cord cutters," "cord shavers," and "cord nevers," but there are still millions of subscribers that are happy to plunk down in front the their TVs. With that said, broadband is already a bigger business than video for some of the top cable operators, and that will continue.

Re: Skeptical
Broadband service is where it's at! That's no surprise. The money is somewhat shifting away from traditional cable offerings onto broadband service plans and distributed subscriptions. Is cable making up the difference simply by selling more broadband-only packages? Does the shift impact core business at all?
Re: Skeptical
@michelle, I haven't been following the earnings reports of late, but over the last few years the basic video subs were plummeting off a cliff for MVNOs. In addition to broadband, I think business services will also post increased revenues going forward.

Re: Skeptical
@Mike, great article! So it appears that their Viper platform provides the capability of migration of their existing broadband onto the new platform to host the integration of old and new. That would provide them the capability to remain a strong player across the evolving technologies, it would seem. If so, that does appear to be a transformation that can support video, etc.

Re: Skeptical
@afwriter, I am tracking the same trends. I think the younger set is going to go for video, 4G and even the 5G (which I understand will be even more disruptive.
Re: Skeptical
@DHagar, yes. Comcast will be ready for the IP transition via Viper. That article is a few years old, so I'm sure they have even more things running on it now.
