Platinum

Thank you very much for the outstanding presentation, Mike!

Steel

My pleasure Andre. We've got another show coming up next Thursday.

Author

Thanks, Mike - great show!

Platinum

Thank you all for your great questions and comments. Thank you Mike.

Steel

Great show! Thanks @Mike and @Andre

Platinum

Our core backbone carries ~120PB/day which is doubling year over year. The old "hardware way" of configuring, sparing, cabling, etc. doesn't scale...software control is key

Steel

Andre, Thanks for the white paper. Do you have any other resources you can provide for reading?

Platinum

OK, thanks again Andre, and thanks to everyone that listened in and posted here today. We need to let Andre get back to work!

Author

Always leary of divergent challenges--....

Platinum

Can't wait to see the future of Open ROADM.

Platinum

The openROADM community is certainly open to all needs including muxponders.

Steel

150K increase...holly cow.....that's why I suppose being "hardware independent' of sorts will play a profound role.....

Platinum

Andre, not sure if you missed this one, but:  Open ROADM so far is focusing on 100G transponders.  Is there a roadmap/plan to expand to cover 100G muxponders?  (Muxing 10x10GE/OC-192/etc. into 100G?)

Steel

Re In addition to the interfaces and optimum networking you are speaking of, does this represent then a new architecture (ie platform) that will become the future of networking?

The overarching architecture we're driving at AT&T is called ECOMP which I invite you all to checkout. att.com/ecomp

This whitepaper describes our model driven software defined architecture for all areas of our network transformation.

Steel

Great questions so far everyone! Andre will be here for 5 more mins.

Author

Interesting how you all were able to bring the competitors together as you have......

Platinum

@dhagar good question...

Platinum

Here's another good one:

In addition to the interfaces and optimum networking you are speaking of, does this represent then a new architecture (ie platform) that will become the future of networking?

Author

How is AT&T deploying Open ROADM?  It is a leader in the Smarter Cities, for example, is it using this design and capability in those projects?  What other projects are they using to demonstrate the Open ROADM capability? What projects are being planned to demonstrate value with 5G?

Platinum

Glad to have joined..albeit a bit late...quite insightful in terms of making sure the network is "hardware independent"...and that's so exciting to be witness to :)))

Platinum

Regarding the 100G and beyond posts, certainly there's work underway defining specifications for greater speeds which we expect openROADM specs to evolve as well.

Steel

Here's Andre's recent blog about Open ROADMs.

Author

Re 5G and importance of optical. ROADMs will play a significant role as we virtualize the RAN and incorporate NFV. Having the flexibility to shift VNFs to meet surging demand as well as having software control to support expanding air interfances and latency will all be dependant on a robust flexible optical layer.

Steel

Andre I aksed the question re: Terrastream. I guess you are saying that there is space for both passive as well as active optical and more of the latter in a world full of mesh networks? right?

Re So does this mean lower potential capex and higher opex?

Yes, capex and opex savings is a huge driver. re capex, having multiple vendors compete for transponders, plugables, switches in the same metro will certainly drive competition. Re opex, software control to automate once manual taks will certainly drive lower opex

Steel

How about this one Andre?

Open ROADM so far is focusing on 100G transponders.  Is there a roadmap/plan to expand to cover 100G muxponders?  (Muxing 10x10GE/OC-192/etc. into 100G?)

Author

Is Open ROADM scalable to beyond 100G DP-QPSK?  I.e. be able to spec/define interoperable solutions for 200G QAM, etc.?

Steel

We have lively discussions on TT about 5G. How critical is optical fiber to 5G?

Author

Agreed - great show - and his explanations and presentation are outstanding!

Platinum

So let's give Andre a few minutes to scroll through your questions.

Author

Great radio show!

Platinum

In this new design, what role does he see for AT&T and its leadership?

Platinum

How do you see Open ROADM benefiting rural areas and benefits persons during catastrophic events such as wars, typoons, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. ?

Platinum

Open ROADM so far is focusing on 100G transponders.  Is there a roadmap/plan to expand to cover 100G muxponders?  (Muxing 10x10GE/OC-192/etc. into 100G?)

Steel

He mentions the breakthrough collaboration among the three vendors, does he expect other vendors to join the open ROADM model?  How long does he expect it will take - evolution or transformation?

Platinum

@michelle I would agree

Platinum

With OpenROADM it seems like AT&T will have a lot of items to manage since each locaiton will have a different configuration.  So does this mean lower potential capex and higher opex?

Steel

something I don't say everyday: tunable lasers

Platinum

poll

collaboration among vendors

Platinum

Great questions, folks!

Platinum

How soon can we expect to see other SPs joining OpenROADM.  Seems like without other SPs in the MSA OpenROADM is basically an AT&T open RFP.

Steel

Will do NewlPLiz on the poll!

Platinum

In addition to the interfaces and optimum networking you are speaking of, does this represent then a new architecture (ie platform) that will become the future of networking?

Platinum

Do each of  the three intial vendors participating in the MSA have ROADM products that are Open ROADM compliant.

Steel

My poll response: Collaboration among vendors

Steel

What is the strategic plan or vision for the next five years for Open ROADM?

Platinum

What specific security standards are being used or considered?

Platinum

Time for the live questions in a few minutes. Start sending in your questions. I will try to get through as many as I can and those we don't get to on the show, we will try to answer on the post-show chat.

Author

Can you discuss the relevance of Open ROADM in a future of collapsed IP/Optical transport networking (Think DT Terrastream)?

Is this something that will be relevant for entire transport network or perhaps just niches (submarine, lit fiber etc.)

Hey listeners, be sure to vote in Mike's poll...we dont' want him to feel bad, right? ; )

Platinum

Poll response: Flexibility with software, including turning capacity up or down

Platinum

Is it open to other countries to participate and contribute?

Platinum

Flexibility with software, including turning capacity up or down

Platinum

are software or hardware standards more important going forward? I would imagine software...

Platinum

poll

What do you see as the biggest benefit to Open ROADM?

Flexibility with software, including turning capacity up or down

Specifications to break current vendor lock in

Open interfaces

Benefits to metro network

Collaboration among vendors

Author

Community support is a great component to gain momentum. You need to get buy-in from stakeholders and supporters.

Platinum
NewIPLiz, yes, definitely. LOL!

Platinum

@freehe grandparents always seem to know best, right?

Platinum

I agree. I tried to urge executives at past jobs not to buy software from the same vendor. Open Solution is a great concept. My grandparents said "never put all your eggs in one basket."

Platinum

Q for Andre: where do standards fit into ROADM?

Platinum

Wow! Looks like we've got a full house.

Platinum

Good morning/afternoon all. Good to see an active group today.

Platinum

DWDM is a term I have not heard for a long time....

Platinum

Good morning from Silicon Valley.

Steel

Green Acres is the place to be, right? @dkrozier

Platinum
