Telecom Virtualization Growing Pains
@Mike, excellent article and assessment of true transformation!  He has it absolutely correct.  If you are truly transforming to virtualization the new technology capabilities will "disrupt" the culture/training, business operations, processes, etc.  That is, in my mind, both the agony and the ecstasy of technology - but when you go through the transformation you end up with better designs, optimized processes, and value-driven propositions.

I think that's why there are so few examples of complete success yet, in that the leading companies have already recognized this and are busy "building" the new capabilities with a fail-fast mentality.

Having information and leadership, such as Telcotransformation provides truly helps drive the progress towards real transformation.

<the technical hurdles were easier to overcome than the organizational and business issues.> @Mike I've been noticing that point and the need to get people who can adapt, to learn the skills necessary to make the most of the technology. That was the focus of  Accenture's latest technology trend report, "People First: The Primacy of People in a Digital Age."

@Ariella, great point.  Yes, I believe that is one of the hidden jewels and opportunties to truly implement virtualization and unleash the real potential.

Great article and points in that people can either become an asset or a barrier in this transformation.  Developing people and their skills will truly build the capability of an organization to move into the digital age.

@Dhagar exactly, the people need to be on board with the technology in order to really extract value from it.

Re: Telecom Virtualization Growing Pains
@Ariella, I would not be surprised, as we see examples like AT&T and other companies that make this investment and reskill their people, to actually add an entire new level of market opportunity as companies really engage people in using the data - as you point out.  Not only will they gain the productivity and operations value, but if the employees really become dependent on data value, I believe they will drive the opportunities to another level of demand for advanced technology (i.e., virtualization, analytics, etc.).

Re: Telecom Virtualization Growing Pains
The requirements for new skill sets, internal processes and culture change in order to better enable digital transformation is a huge problem for any business and can halt growth and innovation.

Companies seem to forget that they must constantly evaluate their business processes, culture and skill sets to ensure they remain aligned wtih the company goals and objectives, mission and vision.

So many companies focus on implementing new technology but lag behind in these other areas. At least Telecom Italia was wise enough to identify their weaknesses and is developing a plan to address them. Hopefully other companies will do the same.
