Re: AT&T's Donovan blew it out of the water
> "The challenge is to create a standard that everyone buys into..."

I'm not so sure that a single company or organization can/should create the "next" standard. The telco world seems to need to be reminded every so often that open protocols are the way to get everything connected. Ethernet has been doing very well for decades for a reason....

more competition is good, right?
> "White box networking tips the scales towards the service provider/enterprise since they can shop for the best bargains on a quarter by quarter basis. There's the potential for a vendor to slash prices in the short term to win business, but then someone else could do the same to them the next quarter...."

The trend of lower cost (and open source) hardware is going to have an immense impact on networking vendors. Service providers still need to be able to offer differentiated services, but building that on top of generic hardware might be tough -- though telcos/MSOs appear to be ramping up their devops to try to make their own software stacks up to the challenge.

The interesting thing to watch is how/if a networking equipment maker can become an "Apple" of the market by integrating proprietary hardware/software with really unique functions that can't be easily copied with generic hardware. OR.. will the market become like the Android world -- based on open source and highly fragmented and forked?

Re: AT&T's Donovan blew it out of the water
Customers are very demanding @Ariella. We are so used to having everything at our fingertips that when something doesn't work right off the bat, it's bad news for the provider -- not matter what they are providing.

@Ariella;

Single Standard model appears to be a future possibility for sure. I am sure and would rather hope that provider companies look into adding a 'customize the standard' capability so it's not like one suit fits everone's needs kind of model. Ofcourse every custom option is subject to additional price. But that will create a perception of standard as well as ability to customize as per one's need and priority. The nerve of today's consumer is 'I need what i want'.

No worries Mike. I am sure you are super occupied over there.

Appreciate the information you provided.Also I reviewed your other post as well.

Price is the driving factor obviously. As you rightly said i can foresee provider companies lining up with their bargains highlighting several options for consumes to choose.

@mpourayran Indeed. Over time, the industry is forced to agree on a single standard, though that can take a few years.
