5G
With all the new "Big" concepts I think it's interesting, but there needs to be at least something come out of them. The word "Big" is being thrown around a lot, which is fine, but there needs to be something behind that word.

As for the 5G coming out in later years, I can't wait to see the new technology and connection that it's able to hold. However, I think it's a great idea for them to come out with 4.5G. It gives the people a little insight into where exactly they're heading and building up to 5G.

still looking forward to leapfrogging to 6G!
Meh. Let's skip all the incremental 4.5G, 5G, 5.5G.. and go straight to 6G or 11G already. :P

Software defined radios with infinite bandwidth from multplexed, orbital angular momentum (OAM) mesh networks with optimized pcell algorithms.... Make it so, Commander Data!

Okay.. we'll get there someday. And maybe we won't have to worry too much about spectrum auctions anymore.

Re: Spanish Summits
@freehe Interesting, I haven't seen the decimel points added on to the measurements of G anywhere else. I supppose it does make sense to have some measure of incremental change. Certainly, mwe've seen the .2 kind of thing for software iterations.

Re: Spanish Summits
During the use of GSM technology, GPRS was referred to as "2.5G" and EDGE was referred to as "2.75G."  During 3G technology, UMTS was followed by HSPA and HSPA+.  Fractional G improvements have existed for a while.

Some may feel it is just marketing ploy. However, the fractional G improvements did provide new capabilities without having to provide a completely new architecture or interface. 2G was used to create GPRS and EDGE. 3G was used to create UMTS and HSPA and to build 4G.

Whether 4.5G or 5G is implemented depends solely on whether telco vendors want to wait until all of the 5G features are fully implemented or provide incremental features and upgrades using 4.5G. If 4.5G is implemented it may change the direction of vendor implementation, spending and revenue generation.

Re: "Big"
@afwriter, I think we need to hear more about Huawei's 4.5G plans. It seems like AT&T, Verizon and others are ready to move forward on 5G, but Huawei thinks we need a prior step?

Re: "Big"
afwriter, that's a smart approach (4.5G) to assist in the transformation and get people relying on their services.

I think Huawei is the one company that can thing big - in that they are building the platform to deliver big.  These aligned capabilities, along with their clear vision, puts them in the lead in my view.

Re: "Big"
@Mike Robuck do you think that 4.5G is a way to get a cheaper improvement out there before 5G so when 5G actually gets here consumers are underwhelmed?

Re: "Big"
@afwriter, not to date myself, but all of the "Big" references made me think of the Tom Hanks movie. JT, Huawei is certainly throwing a lot of resources behind these latest products and services. The 4.5G is an interesting play given the recent news that AT&T is gearing up for trials.

"Big"
With all of the "Bigs" in quotation marks it makes it feel as though "Big" is becoming the next "big" thing to mean nothing.  Are all of these things deserving of the term or is Huawei just taking advantage of a popular keyword?

Spanish Summits
Beyond the Digital Operations Transformation event, I see four more summits that Huawei is hosting in Spain. That's big indeed. (So I guess they'll also be going to the BIG Communcations Event?) I'd pick the narrowband (NB)IoT and Video Everywhere summits, if I had to choose. Esp NBIoT.
