Another example Mike used was data notifications on cell phones. Big Data gets those updates to me from my carrier in a much more timely fashion, which is great since we are on a shared plan with our teenage son.

Re: notifications
Big data is very important in troubleshooting problems and providing quality customer service. Many telco companies lack this and fail to provide status updates to their customer service department. When I have a problem with my cable provider I always ask what caused the problem - unfortunately, they are never able to give me an answer.

Information is not being shared throughout the companies and as a result problems continue to happen. To fix problems permanently companies must use big data to determine the root cause, find a workaround to reduce customer complaints and then find a permanent solution. Time is money. The faster problems are solved, the faster revenue can be generated.

Here's an article on how telco can use big data.

Re: notifications
Good to hear about what LaJoie is up to. So the trick here is to tap the data inline and then use analytics to get an event's signature. And then - and here it sounds like the same thing you encounter with some data gathered in some Smart Home technologies - you don't just want a notification engine but a solution. 'Cool - the water pipe at the lake house is busted. Thanks. How about getting me a plumber?'

And you want to know about a problem before it happens, was one of his main points. He's also pretty busy on the SD-WAN side with Viptela, and I'm sure a few other boards as well.

Re: notifications
Good point - to extend the analogy, you'd want a smart home - or network - to give you head's up if really bad weather is headed your way. Provided the notifications are properly calibrated. Nothing worse than an "alarm storm" when there's really no storm in sight.

Re: notifications
The smart home, and going out to smart cities, applications are interesting. I guess I tend ot think of Big Data aas mainly helping enterprises and service providers, but certainly there's plenty of useful info out there that can be acted on.

Big data, not GIGO
Big data and deep learning tech are going to help identify security flaws, too. Unusual traffic patterns and "large data dumps" are going to be easy to spot from hackers someday... but those black hats will have to adapt and not try to steal so much private info all at once -- but then that'll be a win b/c at least they'll steal data more slowly... or less of it before they are caught/detected.

@mhhf1ve  I could not agree more... as from security point of view you are right.... it depends on the others factors... but you did get it right :)
