Re: home automation & security
ms.akkineni, I believe you are right about the consumers - there is a ways to go there.  That's where I believe the "total solutions", supported by platforms, will entice customers with the added services - not just to the concept of Smart Homes.

That's interesting with AT&T.  They are one of the carriers I believe that is truly building a network and building the capability to provide good customer services.

Re: home automation & security
Mike, yes that does make a good sales pitch!  But as you point out, I think the services in billing and broadband of the Service Providers is also more appealing and sustainable in the long run.

@Mike:

I wouldn't deny as it makes sense if we think about platform not contributing to earnings.

But I believe carriers are pushing this more to grab customer base. Most of them now are coming up with their all in one bundle or platform for the same reason. If they have customers engaged for their mobile services they just want to retain them in other areas like TV, Phone etc.,. instead of letting that customer base goto a different provider just for the reason of those services not being available with their moblie carrier. This makes sense and a good opportunity of expansion.

@DHagar:

You are right, the race is cerainly on. But it may still take some more time to pick up speed iwith SMART feature of homes. I don't think average consumers are there yet. But I see lot of push from many providers in diffrent horizons. I personally witnessed AT&T promoting about smart locking homes to one of the customers in my visiti to their store last month.

Re: home automation & security
Comcast's goal is to offer the entire platform. Sort of a "walled garden" approach to home automation and security. The service providers are saying they have an edge because they're already providing billing and broadband into the homes. I guess a competitor could say "we're not Comcast" as a selling point. :)

Re: home automation & security
Mike, I am thinking customers will want to invest in more of the platforms; plus you have the service issues with Comcast.

Also, the platform would better serve the utility companies that are increasingly relying on data and Smart Meters for delivery services.  I would think the platform becomes a host for these multiple services.

I guess the race is on!

home automation & security
Hard to say if the niche/retail offerings are outselling the whole home platforms by communications service providers since the latter typically doesn't include them in earnings.

smart home vs smart phones
We already have smart phones that can activate/control the alarm system and lock the house from the use of your phone. Smart homes will probably have more virtual things to make it easier and maybe robotic things and will it be more affordable to live in, I'm not sure so we'll have to see.
