Thanks for posting that. LR's Mitch Wagner is at OCP and wrote a story on it.

Re: I want to see open underwater datacenters!
Google just joined OCP. Wow. That's an interesting move.

Datacenters are going to be easier to commoditize... Sorry, small web hosting companies!

Re: another one
Yes, very solid point.

I think as long as Telco continues to focus on the consumer and their needs, it can't go wrong. I'm happy to see that they still are invested in improving storage, speed, and security.

Also very true that if everyone pulls together their talents and takes their thinking to the next level, along with the advancing technology, Telco will be great.

Re: another one
Technological advances are great but more can be done with two than one and more can be accomplished with 10 than 5. The OCP is a great initiative and will help companies pull their talent, ideas, and resources to truly revolutionalize the telco industry.

@NewIPLiz:

Absolutely. Lately it looks like there is too much evoloution on Open Source but not right people with right skills are out there to leverage that. We were discussing a similar topic couple weeks ago and thoughts were going around options to introduce programming as one of the mandatory thing in high school. That to me sounds like a good and feasible option to overcome this shortage in future.

Re: It's moving - not too big a surprise
@mhhf1ve:

I can't agree more with you. I believe current Cabel Operator model with regional focus is definitely limiting their growth prospects. It is good knowing about Comcast getting into an Enterprise model as Mike mentioned.

@mhhf1ve:

Interesting information. I haven't heard this either. As Mike stated  the Cloud now has not only reached the ground but also the Ocean now.

Project NATICK seems to be a verfy promising initiative.

Thanks for the link! I hadn't heard of this. Instead of "the cloud is on the ground in a data center" it would be "the cloud is in the ocean in a data center."

I want to see open underwater datacenters!
Microsoft revealed its underwater datacenter project, not too long ago... which is really an ambitious project to get datacenters to be energy efficient and located in cheap but useful spots (since most populated areas are actually near large bodies of water).

http://natick.research.microsoft.com/

I wonder if any open hardware projects would try to take a project like this on... I remember Sun Microsystems had a shipping container datacenter project -- but I assume that got killed and buried by Oracle.
