Re: another one
Good point. One thing about OCP is that while there are a hundred or so corporate members, there are hundreds - maybe a couple of thousand? - individual ones. Who knows how active they are. But OCP has some eight working groups, which would require a good many engineering geeks to set this up, at least on the standards side.

Comcast is getting into the enterprise space, I think Cox is, or has, as well. But I agree, not on the data center side, for now.

The cable operators are too regional and focused more on a small business market. I assume there will be some MSOs with a large enough footprint to try to use the open benefits, but they're not as immediately vested in datacenter tech as much as telcos right now?

It is certainly an exciting time....but I wonder when this all jumps the shark and there are too many open source groups and not enough people to do all the work? There is a skills shortage already.

And this demo last year was interesting. Using Open Network Linux, Big Switch created an OS for OCP.

A cable operator with a large enterprise presence might be interested.

There's so much going on with open source communities. In October, prior to the split, HP announced the formation of yet another open source community called OpenSwitch

Big news for the day or week, yes. Unexpected in the bigger scheme of things, less so. OCP is still a data-center focused thing and DCs are nothing without connectivity, hence telcos. If there's money to be saved in a relevant business line, cable companies will find a way to get involved.

Maybe not a suprise, JT, but still big news, don't you think? Where are the cable operators?

It's moving - not too big a surprise
So the telcos are on the bandwagon crossing the Rubicon - Got it! OCP is moving forward, that's clear. But given existing momentum behind OCP Networking Project and key role of data centers in telco infrastructure, not such a surprising development.

All about getting less expensive hardware?
This is really big news for telcos and MSOs. If telco hardware can become an open commodity, then it'll save enormous amounts for development. This should also make it a bit more competitive for operators, but then there's also all the barriers to entry that the incumbents can ride on, so it'll take a while before any competition has significant impact.
