Communication service providers are well aware that they need to create new ecosystems for the benefit of their customers and themselves, as well as target new business segments such as Internet of Things and OTT.
To get a better feel for where communication services providers (CSPs) were on their respective ecosystem transformations, Heavy Reading in collaboration with Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. , created a survey that went out to Light Reading's global list of CSP registrants.
The survey's results included the finding that ecosystem transformations were being driven by both customers and shareholders. Both of those options were tied for the highest score at 36%, followed closely by market forces and trends such as NFV at 30%.
The top technical barriers were unknown capabilities of third-party software (33%), additional security requirements and OSS/BSS impacts (both at 27%).
CSPs also had concerns about the performance of third-party ecosystem software, and they plan to use a number of means to measure effectiveness. Their three top considerations for evaluating potential partners are security driven (65%), then provisioning and customer-based considerations, at 59% and 58%, respectively.
