Seen & Heard: Verizon & CenturyLink Offload Data CentersWhile Verizon and CenturyLink finalized data center sales this week, both remain committed to continue providing managed services. CenturyLink will now be Cyxtera Technologies' largest customer -- Cyxtera is a new global infrastructure company formed by the group of companies that bought CenturyLink's 57 data centers at a cost of $1.86 billion. CenturyLink Inc. (NYSE: CTL) has retained hosting and cloud assets and will continue providing managed services. in addition, it will provide collocation services through Cyxtera. CenturyLink also has a 10% equity stake in Cyxtera, which is owned by a consortium of funds advised by BC Partners, including Medina Capital Advisors and Longview Asset Management, according to the announcement by CenturyLink yesterday. (See CenturyLink Finalizes Data Center Sale.) "We really don't think that owning the physical asset is going to impede our ability to sell those services and continue to drive our focus on hybrid IT and digitization," said Dean Douglas, president of the enterprise segment for CenturyLink, in an interview with Light Reading's Carol Wilson. "We still have two feet in the business: one foot in the IT world and one foot in the comms world. The only difference is, we don't own the physical assets in the IT world the way we do in the comms world." (See Data Center Deals Not Slowing Managed Services Push.)
Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) is also having a busy week and finalized the sale of its 29 data centers to Equinix for $3.6 billion, which was announced in December of last year. Although Verizon will no longer operate these data centers, it will continue providing managed hosting and cloud services. Verizon made a move to divest its enterprise cloud services business, revealing yesterday plans to sell its enterprise cloud services division to IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) -- a deal for an as-yet-undisclosed amount that will likely close later this year. (See Finally! It's not surprising that both Verizon and CenturyLink remain committed to the managed services business as significant growth is forecasted in that market. The telecom managed services market is projected to nearly double over the next five years -- from $11.90 billion in 2017 to $22.58 billion by 2022, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 13.7%, according to a recent Markets and Markets report and as noted by Light Reading's Wilson. — Kelsey Kusterer Ziser, Senior Editor, Light Reading |
