Hulu is working on a new subscription streaming service that will blend on-demand and live content from broadcast and cable channels.
Similar to "skinny" bundles from providers such as Comcast and Sling TV, the new service from Hulu LLC would include entire channels from broadcasters and cable networks. While details on pricing are currently lacking, Hulu is looking at launching the new service early next year.
Comcast’s NBCUniversal LLC l, 21st Century Fox and Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) own stakes in Hulu, so it seems a safe bet that some of their content will be included in the new service.
During today's upfront presentation at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City, Hulu announced that its subscriber base had grown more than 30% year-over-year and that it would reach 12 million subscribers in the US by the end of the month. By contrast, Netflix sits on top of the OTT leader board with 47 million US customers at the close of March.
