Google Fiber: Phone HomeOn Tuesday, Google Fiber announced it would be offering Fiber Phone to customers in its existing markets for $10 a month. With the addition Fiber Phone to its TV and Internet services, Google Fiber Inc. is now officially a triple-play provider, much to the consternation of traditional cable and telco service providers, although one with a limited geographic footprint. Fiber Phone has some of the same features as Google Voice, including the ability to have voicemails transcribed and sent to users' email addresses. It also has unlimited domestic calling as well as international calls at the same rates as Google Voice. The cloud-based Fiber Phone also has traditional phone features such as call waiting, caller ID and 911, and lets users either keep their existing numbers or pick a new one. As it has done in the past with its Gigabit rollouts in places such as Austin, Google Fiber is providing an online sign up for Fiber Phone, which it has said will be rolled out in phases. — Mike Robuck, Editor, Telco Transformation |
